Google's Android Sideloading: More Friction Than Freedom

Finally got the invitation to #Google's new Android Developer Console for #DeveloperVerification. It says under the "Limited distribution" type, a developer is only allowed to distribute up to 20 devices. The details aren't that clear to me, not even from their official documentation (developer.android.com/develope) which only says "Capped number of apps and installs." In any case, the distribution type itself is unavailable at the moment. So, the invitation was kind of pointless. (I did say I am a hobbyist in the form.)

Google will let “power users” continue to sideload apps from unverified developers

Most phones, tablets, and other devices that ship with Google’s Android operating system come with the Google Play Store pre-installed. But as long as Android’s been around, there’s also been a feature that lets you install apps downloaded from other sources through a process generally known as “sideloading.”

But this summer the company announced that it was going to require developers of apps […]

Android Developers Blog: Android developer verification: Early access starts now as we continue to build with your feedback

To make the open web safer, Google is launching *website owner verification*. Starting in 2026, Google will require all websites to be registered in order to be opened on Chrome.

All website owners are encouraged to sign up for early access. This is the best way to get ready and stay updated.

To get verified, all you need to do is providing your personal details, upload an official ID, and pay a 25$.

For hobbyists, Google is working on another console so you can add every Google accounts that are allowed to see your website.

And as Google is committed to keep the web open, they will provide a command line interface to open a single page of a non-verified website, but it's very dangerous and your Chrome will lose its certification. This will allow banks to forbid access to their website from non-certified Chrome.

Let's see what adb shell pm set-developer-verification-result com.example.myapplication 3 1 does

  • 3: 3 [closed]: Block installs when verification fails or cannot perform.
  • 1: The valid verification result values are: 1 [pass]: Verification passed.

respecto a #cirrus, con la última actualización sale un aviso sobre la inminente "verificación de desarrolladores" que dice:

Ghughel has announced that, starting 2026/2027, all apps on certified Android devices will require the developer to submit personal identity details directly to ghughel. Since the developers of this app do not agree to this requirement, this app will no longer work on certified devices after that time".
