Gustave Dore. So good. the dark and light are so perfect, sort of heavy on the dark? I haven't read the poem but this is an epic illustration.
I wonder if the denizens of hell were like, there go those angels... "We're so special, we're Angels, look at us!"
I think everyone probably identifies with this image, even people on opposing sides of the same issue see this and think they are the angels and the others are the stewing churning demons?
I was thinking of some kind of archetypal - psychological thing about our whole natures and how culture serves to create social creatures.

Here's a picture of early industrial espionage in Sweden. Recently, I learned that Jonas Alströmer, games primarily for making potatoes popular in our country, smuggled three machines for knitting socks from Holland. He then replicated the machines and started up a business (not very lucrative, it seems, but these were early days of the textile industry, which would boom and bloom a little later on). (Why the colorful machine I do not know, must be a later enhancement.)
Apropos of potatoes, they really did a lot for raising Sweden out of our miserable poverty. Not only does it thrive way up north, where people had a tough time growing cereals -- but the big breakthrough came via the realization that potatoes make great brännvin. Instead of distilling liquor from the scanty cereal crops, potatoes could be used for that. Yay. In 1748, countess Eva Ekeblad earned a place in the Royal Academy of Science for her discovery. That says something.

Contemporary art by Irja Čiekča-Schmidt, inspired by traditional noaidi drums, which were also on display at the first-rate world heritage museum at Røros last summer. The drums on display were fascinating, but the most mind-boggling thing was the fact that 1950's researchers made their own interpretation of the symbols on the drums even though the shamans themselves had provided explanations.
Anyway, Røros is such a delightful and amazing place in every way. Situated close to present-day Norwegian/Swedish border, it was subject to constant conflicts and wars, just like that whole mining country. Sometimes it would be Danish and the Swedes came to grab it, sometimes it was the other way round, just like in big parts of today's Sweden. Let's hope today's borders will hold -- the Danish ones not least. (I'm painfully aware that Sapmi borders have been atrociously disrespected for centuries.)

Never did I hear coffee being discussed and debated with such expert proficiency. It was almost scary. Coffee aficionados, though, are friendly people, so we felt right at home even though those token cookies gave us away instantly as the non-believers we are (they are there solely for regular Joes like us, who mistakenly think this is a regular café).
