Someone on GitHub called "Korinel" has startet an attempt to rebuild the #Commodore #CDTV Brick, a two-player IR joystick interface, based on a Raspberry Pi Pico project for the #Amiga CDTV:

"The circled Commodore CDTV Brick was a 1990s CDTV input device that sadly never made it to retail shelves. Instead, it appears that its functionality was integrated into the Commodore CDTV CD1200 (below). The design of this Brick is entirely based on reverse engineering the protocols from the CD1200 Trackball, CD1252/CD1253 mice, Brickette, and the CDTV Remote.

[...]

This purpose of this project is to help makers design and build new devices, as the original retro mice, remote and trackerball command heavy prices second hand so there is an eager market for cheaper alternatives, without these input devices the CDTVs I fear will end up in landfill!"

Last night, we finished building the second transmitter. After minimal debugging we could confirm: alive and broadcasting!

Custom Raspberry pi header with a red and green status LED, both on, and a couple of wires inside the transmitterTwo almost identical transmitters. They are grey metal boxes which will fit into a rack. Both transmitters have a front plate with labelled powerbutton snd status LEDs for transmitting, connected, and running. The original first transmitter at the bottom has an additional "send message" button.Display of an Alphapoc 601 pager showing the received message "Testing", which was sent from the new transmitter.

Aww yeah the parts for my new hardware project arrived!

First day's case re-production arrived and it looks much better than the last batch.

The base is flat. The insert nuts are clean. The aux header retaining pegs aren't missing, and the lip isn't deformed. They really slowed down and did proper quality control.

Manufacturing..

Silkscreen uncle just finished adding the Bus Pirate 5 pinout labels to KF141 quick connectors. We chose the highest quality connector we could source and had the pin labels printed in bright orange to match the release levers. Things were backed up a bit, but the result is nice...

Clear back in September (!), when the Bus Pirate enclosure tooling started, there was a flash card slot. Recently we swapped it for a NAND flash for speed. However, now we have a unused slot in several thousand enclosures. This plug, made in OpenSCAD, fills the hole. Eventually..

REV10 boards arrived. New buffer works, but the cheap Schottky diodes from my favo comp manuf are LEAKY. Bought the Diodes INC version. Installed one but the problem disappeared. Why? Cold morning. Roasted on the radiator a bit to enhance the leakiness. The genuine part on io6/7

NAND flash is up and running. Access from the terminal was a breeze, but there was some unpleasantness getting the USB MSC disk working. Spent a day debugging spin locks based on the debugger output, but turned out to be a simple buffer overflow due to NAND block size. Tomorrow..

1Gbit NAND flash test board.

The SD card was limiting the maximum speed of the internal SPI bus shared with the LCD. I've already dead bugged a chip and tested it at low speed hanging off the Bus Pirate IO header. It works like a charm for both internal storage and as a USB disk...

Do you have a favorite quick connector? I made a small PCB to use KF141 connectors with Bus Pirate 5. KF141 comes as single terminals that stack together with 2.54mm pitch between terminals. It comes in vertical and right angle versions. Very handy for quick bare wire hookups.

Sample AUX cable with dyed crimp housings just arrived. Very pleased!

Black housings are common, but the dyed-black version reflects light like the other dyed parts and seems to match a bit better. AUX doesn't have a power pin, so we didn't do red at first, but after seeing the..

SI7021/SHT21/HDC1080 are nearly identical inexpensive I2C temperature and humidity sensors. Macro (2) in I2C mode demonstrates how to access it with the Bus Pirate, and reads out the key data. I'm still experimenting a bit how best to include device demos - both built into...
