I could have sworn #Criterion released a bluray of Space is the Place.

Just paused my criterion channel subscription. I really love the mission, but they haven't had much that I absolutely have to watch, or stuff I haven't already seen, since maybe November.

I will probably binge Blossoms Shanghai over the next few weeks, take a breather, and decide if I wish to continue the subscription in June.

If anything essential hits the service between now and then, please let me know.

Just saw the extras on the Criterion disc of Akira Kurosawa's crime masterpiece "High and Low" (1963). Am I a bad person for forgetting all the discussions of world-class filmmaking and recalling only trivia?

1) The central idea comes from a book by Ed McBain

2) For one 2-second shot from a passing train, they removed the roof of a house

3) Kurosawa had Nakadai's hairline shaved to look more like Henry Fonda's

4) In old age, Kurosawa had longer ear hair than Yoda.

The Video Privacy Protection Act, America's last privacy law, was successfully used by a plaintiff last year to sue #Criterion for sharing records of videos viewed by their users with a third party. Yep, nevermind Facebook and Google becoming willing intelligence partners to a fascist government, no, what's important is that no one ever know I streamed Ozu's "Tokyo Story"

Finally watched #GhostInTheShell (1995). Pretty awesome. So that's another done, just 39 more great films to see before they leave #Criterion at the end of January. 😹 #movies

Daytime interior photo of a white, 3 ounce, ceramic espresso (demitasse) cup with a shot of espresso, on a gray diatomaceous-earth coaster on a maple desk surface. The blue text on the cup reads "Cyber-Physical Systems Research Center" and wraps in a circle around the logo, which looks like a loosely interlaced, rounded triquetra with thick knots in solid red, yellow, and blue (each its own color). Behind the cup is the tan container of "The Wes Anderson Archive: Ten Films, Twenty-Five Years" from The Criterion Collection

I loved this piece about nostalgia and DVDs and marketing and a little about hope for the future.

@FilmNoirPosters
I just watched that not a couple of hours ago, for the first time. It was ok. Ya, not a great poster. I love watching Gloria Grahame.

It's part of the Blackout Noir collection playing this month on Criterion

Tonight I've picked out two films.

First up, An Afghan Story (2013), directed by Barmak Akram, starring Wajma Bahar, Mustafa Abdulsatar, Haji Gul Aser and Brehna Bahar. It looks intense. A tragic love story, family story.

Second, The Testamen of Dr. Mabuse (1933), directed by Fritz Lang, starring Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Otto Wernicke, Oscar Beregi Sr. and Gustav Diessl. It's a sequel to Lang's first Mabuse story from 1922. And you have to read the Wikipedia article to understand that this was the last film Lang shot in Germany before fleeing. #criterion

I think I'll have time for a third. I'll let you know.

Just about the only thing that grabbed me amongst this month’s #CriterionChannel stuff — the least Criterion of films. Last few weeks of the gift subscription I was given. Probably won’t be renewing.
