Just spotted a headline (from a publication I refuse to name but which can generally trusted on the subject of sport, though not on any others) "County Championship to Scrap Kookaburra Ball Experiment". If this is true I am delighted - see this post from June 29th for my thoughts on that experiment: aspi.blog/2025/06/29/the-invas

Durham's Dramatic Collapse Sends Them to Division Two as Hampshire Survives by One Point

On the final day of the County Championship 2025, Durham's fate was sealed after a catastrophic collapse at Headingley. They were bowled out for just 85 runs, resulting in their relegation to Division Two. The defeat came after a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful effort by Hampshire, who fell to S... [More info]

The English domestic cricket season has ended with Marchant de Lange getting out caught by Cracknell off Zafar Gohar to make Gloucestershire 281 all out and give Middlesex victory by and innings and 67 runs. Middlesex move up one place from fifth in div 2 to fourth, while Gloucestershire stay sixth in div 2.

An astonishing collapse (even worse than Hampshire's collapse against Surrey) by Durham has saved Hampshire from what looked like certain relegation. Durham started their second innings 129 behind Yorkshire (Durham 346, Yorkshire 475), and have collapsed to 85 all out and defeat by an innings and 44 runs, a result that relegates them by a single point (144 to Hampshire's 145).

Alex Lees settling himself in for what will effectively be an extended net session - neither of these sides needs to do anything, since Hampshire have left them needing no more than the draw that is the overwhelming favourite outcome here anyway.

On Hampshire's now almost certain relegation: I have no sympathy. At their high water mark in this match they needed a mere 120 with all ten wickets standing to win and stay up, and they suffered a truly egregious collapse, the majority of the wickets being more down to bad batting than good bowling. Rahul Chahar bowled very well, but not 8-51 well - that set of figures was a gift from the Hampshire batters to him.

Foakes takes the catch from the edge of Fuller's bat to give Chahar his eighth wicket of the innings. Hampshire 160 all out, beaten by 20 runs and almost certainly relegated (this result means that neither Yorkshire nor Durham have any need to pursue a positive result, and the draw is near certain without chicanery).

Chahar about to get us underway for a session that could last one ball or one hour. With Fuller, who has all round pretensions, on strike the field is set to allow him a single if he wants it.

Off for bad light at Southampton with Hampshire 148-9, needing 33 more to win. I suspect that will that for the day and this match will sneak in to day four due to overly 'by the book' umpiring (Surrey have used only spin all afternoon, and with the Hampshire batters playing largely defensively there is little physical danger).

Nottinghamshire seal the championship in style, things get very interesting at Southampton and a note about the relegation situation. Since I sent this one live yet another wicket has gone, a stupid piece of batting by Kyle Abbott.

Ninth wicket down - Kyle Abbott essaying a slog-sweep and edging to Foakes to give Chahar his seventh scalp of the innings. Hampshire 141-9, need 40 to win with Brad Wheal joining James Fuller.

Sixth scalp for Chahar as Currie fails to spot the googly and is plumb LBW. Hampshire 121-8, need 60 with two wickets standing. Those eight wickets have fallen for 60 from a high-water mark of 61-0.

Burns takes a fine low catch at slip to dismiss Sundar who plays a wild drive at Chahar to have the leggie a fifth wicket of the innings. Sundar out for 11 and it is 117-7, 64 still needed and now only three wickets left.

Nottinghamshire win by 10 wickets over Warwickshire. That means that Nottinghamshire end the season with 225 points. The Trent Bridge pitch will not be hit with the kind of points deduction that could reopen the race.
