US former spies are worried.

"The report, titled #AcceleratingAuthoritarianDynamics: Assessment of Democratic Decline, was released on Thursday by the #SteadyState, a network of more than 340 former officers of the #CIA, #NSA, state department, and other national-security agencies." [1]

"We wrote it because the same tools we once used to assess foreign risks now show unmistakable warning signs at home." [1]

But I can't think of an alternative, and " #CompetitiveAuthoritarianism" seems to be well on its way to becoming the established idiom for referring to such systems, including the one that seems to be emerging in the #US

The detaining of Senator Alex Padilla should be understood for what it is, a sign of MAGA's widening embrace of some of the hallmark tactics of competitive authoritarian regimes.

“When citizens must think twice about criticizing or opposing the government because they could credibly face government retribution, they no longer live in a full democracy,” Levitsky, Way, Ziblatt argued in the NYT recently.
