1000 Day Album Challenge (#24) Gregory Isaacs: Night Nurse (1982) [24.01.24]
cool down the pace for me little woman / you’re dubbing it too fast for me…
sweetest voice in reggae? if caught off guard by the question it might take me a minute, but I’m pretty sure Gregory Isaacs would be my answer. the funny thing is this is his only album I ever owned or know well. I’m sure I know some of his other songs besides these, but no other album.
I’m not sure why I never dug deeper on Gregory Isaacs. just one of those things I guess. people who’s knowledge and interest in music runs broader and deeper than my own also have some holes in their knowledge. it is a constant fascination to me that there is so much music available to us even before the days of the Internet and streaming. if I were to listen to music all day long for my lifetime I could not possibly hear all of the music that I could or would love.
Night Nurse is one of my favorite reggae songs ever. it is just the sweetest groove. my love for the song kinda snuck up on me. it makes sense. Night Nurse has a laid back my incessant vibe to it.
due the the prominent use of synthesizers, the song and album have a strong eighties feel to them. the album features French synth player, Wally Badarou. Badarou was a part of the loosely organized Compass Point All-Stars, the house band for Island Records owner and founder, Chris Blackwell’s Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas. Night Nurse was recorded there. many albums were recorded at the studio and/or with the band or a number of its players. here is a partial artist list to give you an idea - Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Ian Dury, Grace Jones, Mick Jagger, Gwen Guthrie, Joe Cocker, Robert Palmer, John Martyn, Black Uhuru, Jimmy Cliff and Sly & Robbie.
as I frequently do I am listening to the album as I write this. the second stand out track just kicked - Cool Down the Pace, which leads off side two. another sumptuous laid back groove. for me, this has more of a dance floor feel to it. I know that I have been known to dance around to this. (my hips are swaying now. at least in my head.) this and NIght Nurse have made many a playlist for me.
