Kind of grim and astonishing when you think about it from a #class perspective. Who's the typical artist's nude model before 1960? A working-class or peasant girl who does modelling because it's better paid than factory work and less nasty than prostitution. And who's the typical man in whose memory a statue is commissioned? An old, rich, educated man.
Our town squares are full of anonymous nude poor young girls and carefully named, fully clad old rich men.
