An elegant man with shoulder length blonde hair and eyes glinting gold strides between a pair of trees barren of leaves but colored by alien lichen creeping up the trunk. He holds aloft a black sword drenched in purple flame. The edge rides a sinuous curve peaking high then retreating to upturned quillons and a curved grip tapering thin in the middle. The modest flames stand in contrast to shaded greens that tint the mountains behind him. His bearing is regal; his clothes made of fine black leather with gold trim and filigree. A purple sash runs beneath his long jacket, which sways trailing his motion. Behind him ephemeral spirits rise—the most prominent female with one arm and one knee raised. A volcano dominates the background, billowing smoke as it roils with electric green flame.

Establishing shot of Gerald Tarrant dressed powerfully in tabard of black and red. Deeply shadowed, his eyes hint of the same gold that accents his wardrobe. Elevated, he stands in alien woods, poised on a tier of rock that suggests a dais. The sword he grips is pointed tip to the ground. The elegantly curving blade glows blue as the same energy crackles low around Tarrant, flowing off the rock in rivulets that at first glance might be or even swirls of mist. Twisted trees rise behind him—skeletal with tops suggesting the shape of the human brain with forking branches forming ridges. A castle looms out of the misty woods, menacing in outline. The flying buttresses look built to impale with long pikes that bristle with burrs at the sides.

A woman wearing an ornate headdress dominates the right side of the painting. Wild tufts of thick red hair rise above a bronze tiara, a regal mane to match flame-like tattoos covering her forehead. An assortment of jewels, baubles, and tassels hang from the headpiece. Her neck is similarly adorned with decorative armor that flares wide at the shoulders and ends at a point over her breastbone where a test tube lit with a current of electricity hangs. A shimmering cloak drapes from the one pauldron visible. Bands of glittery fabric extends on a diagonal from under the armor to cover her breasts, but leave a patch of tanned skin between exposed. In her hand she holds a large token, the border filled with five-pointed stars wrought in bronze on black and the center a bulbous pearl with a flowing alien script. Behind her floats a huge cloud covered planet. Two crescents shine above, while a larger, similarly clouded moon intersect below. Another satellite hovers nearby—apparently artificial given the green glowing lights of technology at its core and metal bands spider-webbing around it. The star field backdrop is saturated the same lilac hue as the planet, but below wispy clouds are suffuse with golden light that radiates from around the woman.

Four books of nearly equal size arranged on a tan-and-brown background . One book, Night born: Coldfire Rising, by C.S. Friedman is on top of the other three, which are fanned below, with the right and left ones partially cropped. Nightborn's cover is dark, and shows a dark-haired woman in a silvery jumpsuit looking back at a wave of blue-white light. Pointing about 10 o'clock is the orangey cover of When True Night Falls, its central image a dark figure reaching arms out to either side in a frame of ivory branches. We can't see the cover of Black Sun Rising, because it's under Nightborn. Super excited: last night got shipping confirmation for our pre-order of C.S. Friedman's _Nightborn: Coldfire Rising_, the prequel to her Coldfire trilogy, one of our all-time favorites.

In response to your fairly good point about not a ton of female authors, I went back and looked at my kindle for the 5 most recent female authors I've read (discounting one offs I didn't enjoy).
