Rivian's CEO received a pay package up to $4.6B, modeled after Elon Musk's, tying rewards to aggressive stock and profit targets. This huge incentive aims at boosting growth and shareholder value, but what does it say about executive pay norms in EV industry? More details in the article. Kudos to CNBC's reporting. cnbc.com/2025/11/07/rivian-giv #Rivian #CEOpay #EVs

@lemmy_news

This is idiocy. No one is worth that pay package and lately Musk has been more of a broken mast than a sail. What does he _really_ do that delivers that much value to Tesla? Come to think of it, what does the typical billionaire CEO do their justifies the pay?

Could it actually be that these boards are packed with coconspirators friends approving each other's raises?

Rashida Tlaib and Bernie Sanders introduce the Tax Excessive CEO Pay Act

The new bill calls for higher taxes on companies that pay their executives more than 50 times what their workers make

By Lee DeVito September 15, 2025

"#CEOPay is out of control, with the possibility of #Tesla executive #ElonMusk becoming the world’s first #trillionaire. Meanwhile, prospects for average workers have dimmed with decades of stagnated wages and a majority of Americans living paycheck to paycheck.

"On Monday, U.S. Rep. #RashidaTlaib of Detroit and U.S. Senator #BernieSanders of Vermont introduced the Tax Excessive CEO Pay Act to rein in what they call the '#ObsceneSalaries of America’s top executives.'

"House Resolution H.R. 5298 proposes taxing corporations at a higher rate if they pay their executives more than 50 times what their workers earn. If passed, Tesla would be forced to pay up to $100 billion more in taxes over the next decade if Musk’s massive pay package is approved.

" 'Working people are sick and tired of #CorporateGreed. CEOs are now making 290 times more than their average worker,' Tlaib said in a statement. 'It’s disgraceful that corporations continue to rake in record profits by exploiting the labor of their workers. Every worker deserves a living wage and human dignity on the job. I’m proud to re-introduce the Tax Excessive CEO Pay Act with Senator Bernie Sanders to address the massive income and wealth inequality in our nation. It’s time to make the rich pay their fair share.'

"The Tax Excessive CEO Pay Act was first introduced by Sen. Sanders in 2019, with different versions re-introduced since then.

"Meanwhile, the wealth of the top 1% has continued to explode, hitting a record-setting $44 trillion in 2024."

Edward Alexander Lawrence, Congregationalist pastor, says our giving resembles Christ’s life. It brings us into sympathy with Christ’s redeeming work. Christ had joy at the work set before him.

Do we want credit for “sympathy with Christ’s work” without any sympathy for neighbor? Can charitable service seem a box we check off with exasperation until can get back to real imitation of Christ?

How can you enjoy the joy set before us?

EDWARD ALEXANDER LAWRENCE (1808-1883) The Mission of the Church: or, Systematic Beneficence "Our happiness will be like his, as, in beneficence, our lives resemble his. Hence, it is more blessed to give than to receive ; for giving brings us into more perfect sympathy with Christ in his redeeming work, and pours into the soul the blessedness which he contemplated, when, 'or the joy that was set before him, he endured the cross.'"

Filing: #Kroger paid #CEO $19M in 2022, typical worker almost $29K

by Alexander Coolidge Cincinnati Enquirer
May 12, 2023

"Kroger CEO #RodneyMcMullen got a 5.7% pay raise in 2022 as his compensation package climbed $1 million to $19 million, according to a corporate filing Friday morning with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

"The head of the nation's largest supermarket retailer was paid $18 million in the previous year, according to the Associated Press' methodology for executive compensation that excludes pension value changes.

"The typical worker got an $1,800 pay raise, climbing 7% in 2022 to $28,644. The ratio of McMullen's pay to the median Kroger worker – as required to be reported by the government – was 671 to 1, a decline from the ratio of 679 to 1 in the previous year.

"Kroger earned a $2.2 billion #profit on sales of $148 billion last year. In 2022, Kroger contended with higher costs as inflation soared. Overall inflation eased in 2022, climbing 6.4% - slower than 7.2% a year earlier. But the cost of food purchased at #supermarkets and #supercenters rose at a faster rate: 11.8% - the worst calendar year increase since 1978, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"Also last year, the grocer proposed acquiring rival #Albertsons in a $25 billion takeover bid that regulators at the Federal Trade Commission are mulling whether to approve or fight.

"In addition to Kroger stores, the Cincinnati-based grocer operates several regional supermarket chains in 35 states, including #FredMeyer, #HarrisTeeter, #Ralphs, #Marianos, #Frys, Smith's, #KingSoopers, #QFC and others. The company has nearly 2,800 stores and employs 430,000 workers."

During #Antitrust Trial, Exec Admits #Kroger Jacked Up Milk and Egg Prices Above Inflation

"The U.S. #grocery sector—dominated by Kroger, #Walmart, and a handful of other major companies—profited hugely during the Covid-19 pandemic as corporate giants exploited supply chain disruptions to aggressively jack up prices."

Jake Johnson
Aug 28, 2024

"A top Kroger executive admitted under questioning from a Federal Trade Commission attorney on Tuesday that the grocery chain raised its egg and milk prices above the rate of inflation, a concession that came as no surprise to economists who have been highlighting #corporate #PriceGouging across the U.S. economy in recent years.

"Andy Groff, Kroger's senior director for pricing, said during a court hearing on the FTC's legal challenge to the company's proposed acquisition of #Albertsons—its primary competitor—that Kroger's objective is to 'pass through our inflation to consumers.'

"Groff's comment came in response to questioning about an internal email he sent to other Kroger executives in March. In that note, Groff observed that 'on milk and eggs, retail inflation has been significantly higher than cost inflation.'

"A Kroger spokesperson told Bloomberg in a statement that the email was 'cherry-picked' and 'does not reflect Kroger's decadeslong business model to lower prices for customers by reducing its margins.'

"But Rakeen Mabud, chief economist at the Groundwork Collaborative, noted Wednesday that 'execs all over the economy were saying this stuff on their earning calls back in 2021.'

"'This was not a secret,' Mabud added."

A Fresh Approach to Limiting CEO Pay — and Saving Our Environment

A newly drafted Salary Cap Act would powerfully discourage the corporate decisions that so endanger our future.

March 11, 2024
by Daniel Wortel-London

"The compensation of oil company top executives, for instance, links intimately to exploring for new #fossilfuel fields, extracting ever more oil, and promoting still more carbon consumption. Top #BigOil corporate chiefs, as Richard Heede of the Climate Accountability Institute observes, 'have personal ownership of tens or hundreds of thousands of shares' and that 'creates an unacknowledged personal desire to explore, extract, and sell fossil fuels.'"
