@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3. Ah, I missed this one on the weekend! When I was commuting by bike one winter, I’d ride when temperatures were between -10°C and -20°C, sometimes while snow was falling. It was under 5km so not bad at all. (See my Q8 photo.) I didn’t like riding in the dark when days were so much shorter, though, but put up with it.

These days I’ll ride when it’s as cold as 0°C, but generally not much colder unless there’s no snow or ice on the ground.

I agree. I did not start riding at below zero Fahrenheit temperatures until after I got my battery powered heated socks and gloves.

Even more confusing because I read "hp" as "hit points" from the Dungeons and Dragons Role playing game.

Battery warming socks are wonderful. I had the same issue. It would take 4 more hours for my feet to get warm after ther the rest if me.

@ascentale @bikenite A8. So this isn’t from this week, but it’s certainly representative of the weather here, though we have more snow right now. This was the view in front of me while cycling to work 8 years ago.

A multi-use path recedes into the distance. There is snow on the ground on either side of the path. On the left there’s a retaining wall. On the right there’s a railroad track. There are bare trees on both sides. The sky is grey with clouds.

@ascentale @realSiegfried @MarkBrigham @Trailanderror @bikenite A5. I don’t think I do. I don’t really self-identify as a “cyclist”. Instead I’d say something like “I cycle in my daily life to run errands and just get around”. And I’ll generally refer to “people who cycle” rather than “cyclists” mostly as it puts the emphasis on *people*, but partly because *cyclist* can conjure up an image of a certain kind of enthusiast 😀🚴‍♀️❤️

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3 Missed the poll but I’m about 5 degrees Fahrenheit. I just did a ride close to that and it hurt… #bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite A1. I’m in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Still covered with snow and with colder temperatures (-15°C as I type this). Relatedly, nothing new with my bike today 😀🚴‍♀️☃️❤️

80 percent of the world’s population is willing to bike as cold as freezing temperature (or melting temp, depending on your perspective); 32 percent claim to be Zero Heroes on the Fahrenheit scale.

@the5thColumnist @yantor3d @ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite #BikeNite A3 followup: I currently have Schwalbe Marathon Winter Plus on my Brompton Electric G-Line and rode some very bumpy frozen hiking paths with it:

The rear wheel still occasionally slipped, but it was no comparison to riding on ice without studded tires.

#BikeNite A7 it's common to have a "rally start" for any folding bike race, where everyone begins on foot, lined up opposite of their bikes, which are folded. Apparently they don't have to fold them at the finish line, but personally I think that should be standard.

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite I find precipitation deters me more than temperature that said I'm not taking many joy rides under 15f and the total distance I want to go decreases. Luckily most things I need are not too far.

#BikeNite A3x:
One other item to remember about cold weather riding: You generate additional windchill by your movement. In my case when riding my fatbike or studded tire gravel bike, I'm averaging 9 to 11 mph. So even in calm, very cold weather, I figure out the equivalent windchill at the 10 mph mark.

A graphical windchill chart from USA agencies with windspeed in mile per hour as the vertical axis and temperature in Fahrenheit as the horizontal axis, and color coded for how quickly frostbite can occur.

@ascentale @bikenite A8 Today, so perhaps stretching as this week, but saw a steam train go by while out for a ride earlier on. #BikeNite

Posting from the ‘burbs of Minneapolis.

Been doing biz with a mobile repair shop (JV Bike Repair, for those in the Minneapolis area), getting my bikes ready for riding. I rotate 5 bikes (4 acoustic; 1 ebike).

Latest project is a rear wheel rebuild for a Priority Current ebike. They under-engineered the wheel & it’s been shredding spokes since I bought it, so it’s mostly been confined to the stable. Hope the rebuild solves it. #bikenite

@ascentale @MarkBrigham @bikenite A3 #BikeNite I have not (yet) had the opportunity to bike at 0F, but I've been out in 4F, and 32F is not even worth a second thought (to me). I quit growing a winter beard after covid (for mask use) but I own a few balaclavas and scarves.
