"Caution Otters Crossing." The South Ford Causeway linking South Uist to Benbecula in the Western Isles. The 800m causeway was opened in 1982, replacing an 82 span single-lane concrete bridge built in 1942. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/ben

The image shows a causeway curving away from us to the right that is defined by large stones on either side and carries a twin track road. A sign in the right foreground, just to the left of the road, reads "caution, otters crossing". The sky is light blue and the scene is in sunlight.

The view north towards North Uist over the island of Benbecula in the Western Isles. Once accessible only by tidal fords from North Uist and South Uist, Benbecula is now connected to its neighbouring islands by causeways. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/ben

The view north towards North Uist over the island of Benbecula. The image shows a narrow road leading in from the bottom right and making its way through a scatter of mainly white finished bungalows. The land either side is rough grass. In the distance is a stretch of water and there is more land beyond it, with more dwellings and low hills in the distance.

This is Cula Bay on the island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides. We were lucky enough to stay less than a mile from here for 3 days. It was the first Hebridean beach we saw and we went here several times.

A VIRTUAL TOUR OF SCOTLAND

By popular demand we travel the length of South Uist and cross the South Ford causeway to the island of Benbecula. The image shows the causeway, which replace a bridge in 1982 which, in turn, replaced the ford in 1942. The island's name comes from Beinn na Faoghla, meaning "The Mountain of the Fords". Sabella pavonina fan worms feeding #Benbecula #marinelife #seashore

Underwater picture of rocks and reddish brown seaweed. Vibrant green Sea lettuce in the foreground. Center-left is Sabella pavonina 'Peacock' fab worm. It is a marine worm with rubber-like tube projecting from the sandy substrate. When feeding, the worm opens out like a large feathery fan. One in the foreground is pale with reddish bands and one towards the back is a wine-red colour.

Just entered "The Heb" adventure race for a weekend of: exploring the #outerhebrides (specifically, #northuist #benbecula and #southuist), good company, and exhaustion. 200km of varying terrain over two days. It's next September if that sounds like something you might enjoy.

Also, you get a discount for some Durty Brewing beer (brewed in the Borders) so what's not to like?

Colin Thompson and Bill Horsman biking over to the tidal island of Vallay, off the north coast of North Uist. The tide is out and they are cycling across very flat, hard sand. They are in bright red and yellow clothing and stand out against the low hills of North Uist in the background.

Orkney I've been to a couple of times and has generally been pleasant 👇.

My parents met on #Benbecula which obviously makes the Outer Hebrides the best of the islands ( though the one time I was there my tent got levelled in a storm).
