Very bizarre moment when I realised the #Beltane open meeting was indeed going to be held in this church, with me speaking openly as a witch.

...and as a trans woman, but same difference. /hj

Selfie in Greyfriars Kirk, a high-ceilinged church with impressive stained glass windows. I'm wearing a burgundy velvet dress, kinda low cut, with three copper necklaces of varying lengths, and dark red lipstick. I seem pleased with myself.

The first thing that came to my mind was the legend of Lludd and Llefelys from the Mabinogion (https://hear-me.social/@NeuKelte/114574747585097563). The fact that something is repeated every year on the evening of #Beltane, which can be heard in every house in Great Britain, is a very Celtic motif and underlines the eminent importance of the event.

This morning at 07:03PST the sun god will start to reclaim his realm as the moon goddess, who has served us well for the past 6 months, hands over her control of the sky.
It is time to celebrate; we have made it through the darkest part of the year. Soon we will study the seed catalogs, and start dreaming and planning for #Beltane. The spring planting season will soon be here.

I always put lots of presents from and art made by friends on my altar. It makes it feel personal and precious to me. It's more meaningful than adding things just because they are considered witchcraft tools such as candles or athames (I never use those). Does anyone else do that too?

For most holidays we write a whole new ritual and there’s no guarantee that any particular element will recur from year to year. I’ve been to Ostaras without eggs and Samhains without the names of the dead. But I’ve never been to a Beltane without the Maypole. That one remains.

i keep & host a #moon month calendar, with collected NW European month names, including Celtic festivals as full moons, each closest to the quarter points of the solar calendar.

Part of the charm to me is the inter-calendrical, to keep months in step with the sun, so it is a luni-solar calendar.
For this calendar, the calculation goes:
if there's a full moon near the winter solstice, have a whole 13th month, then start again.
