I don't normally buy from Apple but I absolutely loved all 5 pairs of my Beats Fit Pro - Sage Grey. These are the only earbuds that are comfortable and don't constantly fall out of my ears. Now if I could only stop losing them.

My favorite Beats earbuds are at their lowest price in 2025

Have taken my #BeatsFitPro out for a few walks now, quite happy with their… fit. The little wing thingies really keep them locked in place, at least for me, and I can still comfortably wear sunglasses. Super easy to put in and take out.

Never really enjoyed the over-ear style of some fitness headphones.

They’re still on sale if anyone’s interested. bestbuy.com/site/sku/6397391.p

Beats Fit Pro vs. AirPods Pro

Introduction

I’ve been using a pair of Beats Fit Pro earbuds for a couple of years. For various reasons, I was looking at getting some Apple AirPods Pro 2. The various reasons included some flakiness about charging. The final prompt came with what might have been my first Black Friday purchase, when they were reduced to £179. While I have both fresh in my mind, I thought I might offer a comparison.

Technically, the AirPods are a generation ahead of the Beats, with an H2 chip rather than the H1. You might think this would offer (even) better noise cancelling performance, as well as the other claimed benefits, such as conversational awareness, voice isolation, Siri interactions, and so on.

In practice, the thing I care the most about is the noise cancelling, and my feeling is that in terms of that feature, the Beats seem to do a better job. There’s also the matter of price. You can get the beats for as little as £135, which is a lot cheaper than the AirPods Pro, even at their discounted price.

Fit and comfort

It took me a while to get used to the Beats. To begin with, they kind of hurt my ears, and I didn’t find them comfortable to wear for any length of time. But I did get used to them, and eventually they were pain-free. I find them quite easy to put on and off, and (with the correct ear tips) they offer a good seal against outside noise. They’re more discrete than the airpods, plus they’re available in colours other than white. If you think about it at all, the idea of putting something white into your ear over and over again is going to lead to grossness.

The silicone eartips are replaceable, but be warned: you will struggle to find Beats-specific eartips on the aftermarket, whereas a search for the AirPods variety will return hits. The design of the eartips is different. I don’t like the Apple design. They’re hard to pull off, which I suppose is good for day-to-day use (though not for swappage). But they also have a slightly odd texture and seem to get stuck in the ear and turn themselves inside out when you’re pulling the AirPods from your ears.

I’ve also found putting on the AirPods and achieving that seal to be quite a challenge in comparison to the ease of wearing the Beats. Still, it took me time to get used to the Beats, so I suppose that might be true of the AirPods too.

Features

1. Noise Cancelling.

The Beats give you noise cancelling which while it isn’t as good as a pair of over-ear headphones is still pretty decent. My two main tests are entirely domestic: mowing the lawn, and vacuuming the house. I also often have them in as I’m putting the house to bed in the evening, so I’ll be using the electric toothbrush. While they don’t eliminate 100% of vacuum or lawnmower noise, you can still happily listen to a podcast or music while you do these chores. The electric toothbrush is a different matter, since it is vibrating inside your mouth.

I think I’ve only flown once since I got the Beats, and I’ve used them a couple of times on the train. They’re not 100% effective, but they do mitigate the worst of the sound of screaming kids and mewling infants.

I have been less impressed with the AirPods’ noise cancelling. I thought being a generation ahead in terms of chip that they would be miles better, but if anything they’re not as good. This might be to do with a less-than perfect fit in my ears. You can do the same fit test with both Beats and AirPods. For both, I was encouraged to use a larger tip size. Ultimately, I don’t perceive enough of a difference to make the ‘upgrade’ worthwhile. But there are other features…

2. Spatial Audio

What is this? I have never yet listened to any music mixed in ‘spatial audio’ and thought it worthwhile. I certainly don’t want things to change when I turn my head, which seems like a pointless gimick. Dynamic head tracking tuned to the shape of my ears, or whatever? Ugh. I have never really used this kind of feature with Beats, and I don’t intend to do so with the AirPods. I’m fine with stereo. This ‘perfect sound forever’ vibe of offering something immersive, an experience of being ‘in the room’ with the band or whatever: I don’t want this. Whenever I have been ‘in the room’ with a band, my main feeling is always that everything is too loud.

3. Transparency, conversational awareness etc.

Huh. The Beats ‘transparency mode’ was all right. A necessary compromise, sometimes, when you were wearing them in a situation in which complete noise cancelling would be dangerous or inappropriate. The AirPods offer the extra option of “conversational awareness”, which means they dip the volume if they detect someone speaking to you. I don’t think I’ll be the first to say that I prefer to be in control of whether I bother to listen to someone. I found myself, for example, just speaking inanities to the cat while feeding her and I missed several seconds of my audiobook. If you’re in the supermarket and some kid is whining or nagging nearby, why should the volume dip? This feature seems like a solution in search of a problem that nobody has. It’s a feature designed for all the people who were ever annoyed by a person in earbuds not hearing them the first time. A feature for the mums and dads. I think most people will turn this off.

4. Physical Controls

My basic interaction with the Beats was a single tap to start/stop and a double-tap to skip forward 45 seconds. This is in Overcast, my podcast app of choice. In Music, I suppose that double tap just skips a song on a playlist. But I don’t often listen to music. A longer touch will change the noise cancelling mode.

Interactions with the Airpods are far more complicated. Set aside anything to do with phone calls, since that is something that never happens. I’m sure I’m not alone in this. Pausing and skipping requires a squeeze of the stalk, which is a lot less easy than the tap on the Beats. The stalk isn’t particularly long, so you’re at the interface between your ear and the AirPods. It’s really not convenient and I’m still getting used to it. I do it a lot to skip the ads in podcasts, so this is no small thing. The difference between a squeeze to stop or a longer squeeze to switch modes also takes some getting used to.

On the whole, I prefer the Beats method.

Siri will interrupt whatever you are listening to and read out texts etc. on the AirPods. I find this quite annoying, and I’m sure I’ll be switching this feature off.

Conclusion

As expected, the AirPods Pro 2 do have loads more features, but they’re none of them that straightforward to set up and interact with. A lot of them require you to spend time measuring your head or training yourself in some way. It’s a lot of hard work. To get a measure of how complicated they are, just check out the product information page: there are 18 numbered footnotes, and a further 7 (for some reason) unnumbered footnotes. For every claim made about a feature, there’s a footnote. Requires this or that, needs you to have a iPhone handy, may not be available in your language, needs an iCloud account, and so on. That some of the footnotes are clear duplicates of each other suggests that more than one team at Apple had a stake in the collation of the footnotes, and there’s a sense of experimentation and features-in-development about it.

I was thinking that in certain circumstances I might find the AirPods Pro useful to help/protect my hearing, but these scenarios haven’t arisen.

Overall, I’m a little underwhelmed. I’m a little annoyed with myself, because, quite honestly, the Beats are a better, more straightforward, more user-friendly product, and considerably cheaper.

Firmware Beats Fit Pro i Powerbeats Pro można teraz zaktualizować do wersji układowego 6B27 (wcześniej 5B66).
