Day 5:

#20Comics #comics #Beanworld #TalesOfTheBeanworld #LarryMarder

A warm orange and yellow comic cover, with a green, very simplistic character front and center. A baby Bean, a.k.a. Pod'l'pool Cutie, consisting just of a circle with eyes and a single sprout from the top reminiscent of how babies have sometimes been drawn with a single, curly strain of hair.

I’m a huge admirer of comic artist Larry Marder, and love this #FantasticFour-themed cover by him.

It was FF-co-creator #JackKirby who – through his art – introduced Marder to Native American designs, especially #Hopi kachinas.

Very elegant how this abstract drawing captures the individual power sets and at the same time channels the team’s mythical, elemental aspects (water, fire, earth and air).

A cover of Larry Marder's comic book "Tales of the Beanworld" issue number 19, published by Eclipse comics in 1991.
At the top you can see Heyoka, the bean who does everything upside-down and backwards bean, flying through a constellation of shapes reminiscent of the Fantastic Four. It's hard to describe the way this arrangement hovers between abstract and figurative, using basic geometrical shapes that correspond to the way the Fantastic Four have been portrayed in the comics by artist and co-creator Jack Kirby. If you know the comics, though, certain colors and textures form an unequivocal portrayal of these comic characters.

I was reminded just now of the #Beanworld books, and of their creator Larry Marder. We haven't heard much from him lately. He's pretty old now, I despair that we'll ever get a conclusion to the story of the Beans.
