General view, Furness Abbey, England between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Views of the British Isles England Barrow-in-Furness

The image depicts a historical scene showcasing Furness Abbey, an abbey located in England. The general view captures the ruins of this former monastery set against lush greenery and rolling hills under a cloudy sky. In the foreground, there is well-manicured grass with several sheep grazing leisurely near small patches of trees. A path or road winds through the landscape leading towards the main structure of the abbey.

The architecture of Furness Abbey features Gothic elements, such as pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses, evident in its partially standing walls and large windows with tracery. The overall atmosphere conveyed by the image is one of historical grandeur juxtaposed against a serene natural setting, evoking a sense of tranquility and the passage of time since this abbey's peak during medieval times.

The vintage aesthetic suggests that the photo may have been taken around ca. 1890 to ca. 1900 when postcards like these were popular for capturing scenic locations or historical sites. The image is part of a collection titled "Views of the British Isles England Barrow-in-Furness," which indicates it's among other photographs documenting various aspects and landscapes within that region during this period.

There is a horned entrance with a magical ammonite cast on the western door-jamb. This fossil must have been found and specially placed here as something of real significance. Was it seen as a stone serpent or perhaps such fossils gave rise to legends of dragons? The entrance leads to a gallery 16m long, but only 1m high. A torch is required to look into the side chambers. 📷 TheStrollersTaleZine More: megalithic.co.uk/article.php?s #wintersolstice #barrow #solstice #archaeology #prehistory

Stonebarrow - a bowl barrow at Ubley Warren, #Somerset, one of the largest of the Mendip barrows. Upon it meet 4 stone walls, 3 of which are former parish boundaries & has been a boundary feature since at least the 13th Century, when it is named in two charters as 'Steinberga' & 'Stangbarrow'.

Can anyone recommend a stone circle, barrow or standing stone to visit, with kids, between , and the area in ?

The Stone Circles, Odry, Poland

The area where the circles are located is an archaeological reserve. They are the oldest structures of this type in Europe, after the English Stonehenge. The structures have the shape of regular circles marked by vertically protruding large boulders, the so-called stelae. They were erected when the cemetery was established and it can be assumed that they served as meeting places for tribal elders. They are usually devoid of graves. They are from 15 to 33 m in diameter. Each circle has from 16 to 29 stones protruding from the ground by 20 to 70 cm.

In addition to the circles, there are also barrows in the reserve. Over 600 graves have been discovered in the circles and barrows. This is a cemetery of the Goths, who came to Pomerania from Scandinavia in the 1st - 3rd century AD.
