"Independent medias: a continent at the crossroads" - end of an intense day discussing the current stakes of the sector with journalists and media outlets from all over the EU and beyond during the #SpheraMediaLab in #LaVallée #Molenbeek (#Brussels).
Alongside with some people, I pushed for a broader adoption of the fediverse to publish or promote our content. Because independent medias need independent social medias, and vice-versa. Seems obvious said like this but apparently it isn't, yet.
The workshop I gave this morning, "hacking social media algorithms to push independent media counter-narratives" was fully booked though. And these 30 people confirmed the urgent need for strategies to face the current situation and all the shadowbanning and filter bubbles on the mainstream platforms. Although I did give some tools to circumvent automated OCR-based filtering, I also made it very clear that any efforts should now focus on promoting alternatives.
Everybody could confirm how weak was the actual engagement on commercial silos, but the situation is getting worse. I suggested relying more on grassroot, offline communication in complement with the fediverse. But most people who did try using mastodon felt lost and confused here, preferring bluesky instead... thus I at least suggested to do cross-posting with apps such as openvibe or ActivityPub plugins.
What makes people still interested in the #fediverse is its independance and resilience. As @natacha mentioned, there is a real need for a fedi hoster made for/by independent medias, funded by the EU. A common platform to gather and support the integration of independent news outlets such as what @bastamedia did on the web with https://portail.basta.media.
And actually, there actually already exists a similar project that I had the chance to discover by chance when I met a cofounder of @social. I've never heard of it before! Yet, this media produces, federates and translates press articles in 15 european languages! And using the fediverse is part of their core values.
All those are very important topics that we will apparently have the opportunity to further develop in november with #Reset! by #artyFarty in Brussels. So stay tuned!!

Here was an accidentally "arty" shot of the same Painted Redstart in flight. I shot probably 30 frames of this little critter as it flitted about the bushes, but only two came out nice enough to bother editing.
