Question for those who are familiar with Alternative Text for the blind and visually impaired:

When creating Alternative Text for an image of an informational sign such as for a hiking trail, how verbose should it be?

Be My Eyes does a good job with just images and/or a small amount of text, but for informational signs the text can be quite long. I am concerned if I trim too much then valuable information will be lost.

@Samboyy les seuls "moyens" d'automatisation, sont soit des logiciels OCR (de reconnaissance de caractères), avec de grosses limitations, soit des IA qui détectent les contenus des images (et qui passent à côté d'énormément de choses, en plus de tous les autres reproches qu'on peut légitimement leur faire).

La solution alternative, quand tu n'as pas les cuillères de rédiger toi-même le alt, c'est de poster ton image avec le hashtag #alt4me dans le post, tu as pas mal de volontaires abonné'es au hashtag qui se proposeront de le rédiger pour toi.

@michelmorin en relisant, je me rends compte que vous attendiez peut-être une suggestion de robot pour décrire les images.

Si c'est le cas, je ne le ferai pas : je pense sincèrement que ces robots sont nuisibles à bien des égards, et je préfère un million de fois voir quelqu'un tenter de rédiger soi-même le texte alternatif, même maladroitement, plutôt que leur usage.

Et dans les cas où rédiger le texte alternatif serait impossible, je préfère encore un appel à la communauté, comme c'est possible de le faire avec le hashtag #alt4me.

@Mint_Lavender oh and if you're struggling or don't have time, you can do a short ALT and edit later, or use the tag #Alt4Me to get help.
Conversely you can browse the tag and write descriptions if you have time. Sometimes people use the text as is, and sometimes they use it only as a launching pad and rewrite sone or most of it.

Dafür kann es zahlreiche Gründe geben. Welche Möglichkeiten gibt es in diesem Fall?

#Alt4Me & #altbot: Die Erstellung der Beschreibung durch andere User oder einen Bot, die dem Bild dann über "Bearbeiten" hinzugefügt werden kann. Die Ergebnisse des Bots sind leider häufig nicht optimal.

Was wäre an Hilfen noch denkbar & gewünscht?

The first mural I ever painted (1997) was at the Dudley Museum & Art Gallery, for a temporary exhibition of marine Jurassic fossils. Part of the mural featured a pliosaur; I reworked the pliosaur pose in my 2009 "Leviathan" painting for The Etches Collection.
