Thank you for those beautiful stickers. Personally, I don't use Signal but I recognised that (when clicking the sticker URL in your toot using my #Android device) I can select the #XMPP client #monocleschat by @monocles to open the link. Afterwards, the stickers are available.

@debacle @uexo @xmpp hash tags give you a local snapshot of what's happening on your specific social media service and whatever it's pulled in from the outside, whereas with the group you'll *always* see all posts sent to the group. Also people use hashtags a little less deliberately and the group they'd probably only mention if they wanted it to be a group discussion that is sent out to everybody.

@uexo @Menel @xmpp nah, not a protocol, issue, just not what hash tags are for. They're for getting a snapshot of what your server sees about a thing and for discovery, not for discussion that always contains every single thing ever said. Kind of like how in XMPP clients that implement tags it's normally only for the room you're in; the group itself is something different.

Sadly the gup.pe 'groups' don't federate well beyond Mastodon servers. Some other server types can't event follow the groups. #FediGroups was born to work across the entire fediverse.

@Menel @mellium @xmpp Makes sense, even if that sounds like a rather huge problem on the protocol level. Maybe hashtags should be implemented like groups in the first place.

Groups are more powerful, because with Hashtags you'll only see messages your server already receives because someone follows them on your server.
So one never gets all messages that people hashtag.

If you explicit follow a group then you'll get 100% of the messages to that group.
