1. Fill in your profile bio, if you have a website include a link
2. Write an #introduction post, optionally with photo, video, audio attachments
3. Pin introduction post to your profile, pinned posts federate more widely
4. Use hashtags on posts
5. Include text descriptions on attachments
6. Log in through your server’s website, go to Edit profile > Suggest Account To Others, tick box, click Save Changes

People often ask me, "How do I interact with Lemmy"?

Well, in my previous post, I just interacted with Lemmy by quoting @Gaywallet@beehaw.org's post. If you're on Calckey or Misskey (or anything that supports quotes), this will look seamless.

On Mastodon, the Lemmy post will be rendered as a URL. If I wanted to make that Lemmy post look like "native Mastodon", I could have just boosted it, but I wanted to add additional commentary.

The point, though, is that I've interacted with a Lemmy post on a platform that is not Lemmy. This is possible through ActivityPub. The Fediverse is quite magical in that sense.

If you're on Mastodon, Pleroma, Calckey, etc., I urge you all to follow Lemmy and/or Kbin communities and users and start interacting with them. It's important that former Redditors see a bustling community.

p.s. Kbin is part of the Fediverse. You can follow Kbin accounts and magazines from Mastodon etc, and follow Mastodon etc accounts from Kbin.

However, the cross-platform federation doesn't seem to be working properly yet (bear in mind the project is only a few months old!).

There's also a complication about the Kbin.social server being overwhelmed over the last few days. Kbin.social has had to use Cloudflare to cope with the overwhelming load, which is known to mess up federation.

There’s a #RedditMigration to the #Fediverse happening right now. And many of those former #Reddit users are creating accounts on #Lemmy and #kbin.

Funny enough, last December, I predicted there would be another Big Social migration to the Fediverse. I even predicted it would happen in June.

I just didn’t think that Reddit, of all platforms, would be the one to cause the migration.

Big Social has a habit of creating shitty user experiences, and attempting to squeeze every bit of ARPU possible.

Until recently, if you didn’t like it, your only option was to kick rocks.

Reddit doesn’t give a damn. There have been plenty of Reddit alternatives in the past, and almost all of them have crashed and burned.

Except this time, when people join #Lemmy and #kbin, they are interacting with a network of 10 million Fediverse accounts – possibly more. No Reddit alternative has ever had 10 million accounts.

Understand this. Even if Lemmy and /kbin make up an insignificant chunk of the Fediverse right now, everyone who uses those services can talk to 10+ million Fediverse accounts.

Which means that this time Reddit detractors have serious options.

And believe me, more Big Social platforms will cause further migrations to the Fediverse. Each time this happens, that detraction will compound more and more.

Reddit probably doesn’t think this is a big deal. They probably think this is like the other times users expressed dissent.

But this time, these Redditors are discovering the Fediverse.

Since today is #RedditBlackout day, I expect there will be many people trying to look for alternatives in the fediverse. Ever since reading this toot (https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106835057054633379) I’ve started harboring doubts about lemmy being a good alternative (though unfortunately it seems to be the mainstream one). What so far is working for me is kbin.social, however. I am having a few issues (especially since iOS does not have any native app yet), but it looks pretty intuitive, coming from #Reddit

I advise everyone sensitive to themes of human rights, equality or privacy to investigate and decide for themselves what the best option is *for them*, since we shouldn’t just trust some random people’s opinion on the internet, but always question things we are told, in a healthy way.

@zeocen you can even *follow* tags here. Depending on your app of choice, there should be an option when searching a tag to actually follow it, and all posts with the tag will start appearing in your home, pretty dandy 😌

I have a lot of concerns about Meta coming soon to the Fediverse.

I fear what this means for the exchange of information that will inevitably happen between us and them.

What it means legally,
what it means technically,
but mostly what it means ethically.

I also fear for the culture we have developed here.

I have deleted my Facebook account 5 years ago and never regretted it. I do not have any other accounts with Meta. For many reasons, I intend to stay away from this unethical corporation as much as I can.

I do not know what my instance intends to do about this, but personally I will block entirely any instance(s) controlled by Meta. I might also lock my account if necessary. This isn't about the people on there, this is very much about the practices of the corporation that controls it.

I sincerely hope their presence will not break the Fediverse :geodesic:​

I hope we will stay strong and fight together for the better world we have started to create ✊:heart_cyber:​

But I can’t help seeing the arrival of Goliath as a threat to the new world we have built...
