"Where do we go from here?"

A short film on urban transportation from the National Film Board, shot in 1973.

The most amazing thing is that a few car models and haircuts aside, you could take a lot of the exact same shots today. Those subway trains are still in service, those highways are all still there if busier.

@Szwendacz Plus updates to the sidebar and new features like vertical tabs (in addition to underlying things such as Gecko and SpiderMonkey).

Many Mozillians, both contributors and staff, are working hard on all this.

The recording for my #FOSDEM26 talk is available on the @fosdem website! fosdem.org/2026/schedule/event

Summarising about two years of hard work in 10min wasn't easy, as adding built-in support for Exchange into @thunderbird came with its lot of twists and challenges, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out 😁

A photo of me talking to an audience, with a title slide projected on the wall that reads "A short story of supporting Microsoft Exchange in Thunderbird".

@seekingfreedom It seems to be some kind of colourful indicator. Not sure what it is supposed to indicate though.

@seekingfreedom I have not met either, but I am sure that they are both really nice people.

@drahardja Firefox seems to be working fine for me. Are you getting any error messages?

@bluepupboi I went to see the Atominium myself yesterday and glad I did. Always good to appreciate a city away from the event that brought you there.

At a past #FOSDEM, I went on a tour of the European Parliament that was very interesting.

Found:

A depiction of the trolley problem featuring Wile E. Coyote and The Roadrunner. After pulling the lever, the trolley slams immediately off to the side off the rails completely and runs over Wile E.

If anyone is still in #Brussels after the #FOSDEM: Don't miss the #Banksy museum and Banksy's + #Monet's collaborative work depicting @videolan's fight against #capitalism.

@jbayes I will admit that I was not aware of Hide Distracting Items as a feature. Does look very awesome (and just a little bit...Thanos).

I had a look around and found this add-on that seems to do something very similar -

addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firef

(There is also addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firef that might be worth looking at.)

If you think this could be something to think about to be included in Firefox, might be worth dropping a note into our feedback platform at connect.mozilla.org/

2026-02-02

@jackie To be fair, "kill switch" does sound a bit harsh. There never has been any need to go looking in about:config to turn features off.

2026-02-02

@jbayes Hiya, keen to understand more (and hopefully help). What distracting items are you trying to hide?

@raymaccarthy @firefoxwebdevs It would need to cater for not only Windows and macOS (possibly multiple versions of both) as well as quite a few different Linux desktops. At the same time, it would need to have light and dark modes for all.

With Fx having the same broad style across most platforms feels much better to support and easier for contributors to work on.

2026-02-02

@raymaccarthy @firefoxwebdevs Apologies, I am not trying to be disingenuous. There was a survey recently from the Mozilla Foundation that was looking at their future work. Many people seem to think it was tied to Firefox.

2026-02-02

@raymaccarthy @firefoxwebdevs Catering for every UI would make maintaining the features that people like to use much more challenging.

2026-02-02

@raymaccarthy @firefoxwebdevs The recent survey was not from the Mozilla Corporation (that makes Firefox), but from the Mozilla Foundation. I would not expect it to mention Firefox.

2026-02-02

@raymaccarthy @firefoxwebdevs Keen to understand more - why do you need to block scripts to be able to view the Guardian website?

What happens when you try to view the page without this?

Is there any error message?
