How well can you read Mansi ornaments? Hare ears, reindeer antlers, or frog legs? Take a quiz and share it with other Finno-Ugric fans: docs.google.com/forms/d/1yyeP9

A recent tweet from Qikipedia:
In the language of the Selkups, a Siberian ethnic group, the word ‘palč́o’ means ‘wind’ and the word ‘palˊǯ́ö’ means ‘turd’. Both words are now associated with the Russians whose arrival brought an unpleasant ‘wind of change’ to their lives. (h/t @ksushagal)

Hey, does anyone here use any software to create polls for in-person teaching? Like scan a QR-code, answer several multiple-choice questions, and see anonymous results on a webpage? I would really appreciate your advice! #teaching #students #polls #software #apps #university

I asked DALL-E2 to generate me a portrait of a linguistic typologist.

I'm sure I met this guy at ALT once 😃

Merit Niinemägi (Tartu) worked on Estonian and Aanaar Saami, Luan Hammer (Vienna) on Meadow Mari, Kitti Voiter (Szeged) on Hungarian, Mátyás Béres (Szeged) on Northern Mansi, and I contributed Finnish. The article is a part of the Festschrift for @johannalaakso edited by @jeremue

Together with several students from Estonia, Austria and Hungary, we wrote a paper about the ways in which languages without grammatical gender (Uralic) can express gender in lexical items (job titles). The topic is way outside of my comfort zone, but we have definitely learned a lot! homepage.univie.ac.at/jeremy.m #uralic #finnougric #uraliclanguages #gender #linguistics #corpuslinguistics

TFW together with your doctoral student you come up with such an exciting idea that you want to abandon all of your own projects and just work on that instead #supervision #gradschool #phd #studies #linguistics

A nice recent article by Katherine Hodgson uses Armenian data to show what I have formulated for myself after years of working on participles: in relativization, it is often not syntax that matters but recoverability – in short, speakers say what listeners will likely understand: degruyter.com/document/doi/10. #linguistics #typology #syntax #relativeclauses #relativization #armenian
