@alan My tip would be to finish the first draft, even from memory of what the rest was if you find yourself unable to not polish on the text, but generally, every first draft is going to have tons of problems. What you see in the book store are first drafts being edited, a lot of times maniacally...

Once you've finished the first draft, put it away for a cool down, allowing yourself to forget about it and come back to it with fresh eyes, almost like a reader would.

I usually focus on large questions before I get to the words and sentences. This is to allow cutting things without polishing them and feeling I've wasted time doing that.

Foremost, I ask, does this text give me ideas for things to do? Because, if not... well, then that's it. If I'm like, I got nothing... obviously neither does the text.

Part from that I look into questions like, does the story make sense? Is the plot convincing? Is the main character, in any scene at all, captivating, realistic, alive, fresh or jumping off the page (they won't be though out, but there could be glimpses).

From then I'll drill down into characters, world and then structure, plot, parts, and scenes, and finally once I've done all that (and potentially cut some) I start worrying about words, sentences and such. Of course, if small errors jump out at me, I give it a stab, but I don't worry about it before I get to that step.

I suggest checking out "Revision and Self-Editing for Publication" by James Scott Bell, it inspired me...

@VulcanTourist You may have a different experience than I. Most people are more than willing to figure out things that don't work, and they use about 10% of my energy... the 10% that isn't usually takes the other 90%. So them being few doesn't really make them low impact...

I also have this notion that the loudest, most obnoxious people get to represent their whole group (whatever people that group is made of). When it feels like everyone who belongs to this or that group is as bad as the baddest specimens... that could actually be a judgmental view of that group...
