The eu-commission wants to expand chatcontrol 1.0 which is obviously a very stupid idea due to technical flaws with AI detection & because it's a very disproportunate approach to CSAM which also makes the EU-Commission appear paranoid to say the least. The LIBE-committee has the power to stop the expansion and the parlament has also suggested solutions that are more privacy conform.
Following the Australian precedence, the UK, France, and Spain want age checks for social media.

On January 30, the EU Council voted to endorse a two-year extension of "Chat Control 1.0". This is a significant setback. If passed, it legalizes the mass scanning of private messages and photos by US tech giants using error-prone AI, without any suspicion of crime. It also paves the way for mandatory ID verification (ending anonymity) and effectively bans anyone under 17 from using messaging apps. potentially preventing them from even chatting with their own parents.
However, the fight is not over.
The Council's vote is not the final word. Under EU legislative procedures, the European Parliament must also agree to the extension. Right now, the power to stop this lies with the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).
They are deliberating this week to set the Parliament's position before the current regulation expires in April. If the LIBE Committee stands firm and rejects the extension, this mass surveillance regime can still be stopped.
We must act now to influence their decision.
Please do not stay silent. Contact the LIBE Committee members. Tell them to reject the extension of the Regulation and to defend our fundamental right to privacy.
We need targeted, judicial solutions, not a permanent state of mass surveillance.

I have two things that are worth sharing (inclduing the tool to contact the MEP's): one link for german speaking users about the "Klarnamenpflicht (Full name obligation)" and a doubleset of screenshots which mentions the potencial extension of the "temporary" chatcontrol proposal. The LIBE-Committee has the power to stop the proposal and I recommend everyone to first contact them and then you can contact everyone else.
Dont get me wrong, I totally support the idea of keeping kids of social media for as long as possible, but the issue with such regulations is always the enforcement.
#ageverification is too much of a privacy and security nightmare as much as it is survaillance of citizens.
Little thought: Maybe educate parents and make them do their job - parenting - again.

Mobile Apps primarily take away usefulness and power from web browsers. The security aspect is more interesting: for the company and in particular aspects (such as banking, 2fa or password managers) for the users, security increases. In the case of non critical apps, having one secure and trusted browser running on your device is ages more secure than 50+ mobile apps from different vendors all having access to your phone.
Vimeo is asking me for age verification to continue access my own files, even if I had this account since 2007. Even if I was 1 year old when I created that account, I'd still be 20 years old now.
So why the ask? What a useless thing.

I know I am that annoying guy, but if you accept age verification in ANY way, you legitimate the idea by consenting yourself. In order for change, you have to defy and not accept survaillance and censorship methods thrown your way!

Counter point, many tech savy and privacy enthusiast young people I know have heard or even actively use the fediverse.
The big difference is that many arent clearly differentiable due to using the service in a way traditionally older demographics interact online (e.g. using long paragraphs, no videos).
Sadly, the mainstream remains unaware or unwilling as per your point.
Imma migrate as soon as my acc is ready!
European Alternatives are almost always superior to their US based counterparts!
