inspired by CLAUDE.md, I’ve started putting markdown files named after coworkers into work code repos so I can remind them to stop doing shit to the codebase that annoys me

for some reason they’re all mad at me now, which means ill be adding commands to JEREMY.md for an attitude adjustment

I...can we just stop trying to be reasonable about "AI"?

Like, I get it. Y'all were raised to believe that "adults" are reasonable about *everything* - world-destroying technologies, abusive bosses, global child rape trafficking conspiracies, Nazis - you know, the works.

But that's turned into this knee-jerk "what is the reasonable take on the Torment Nexus?" thing and I'm sorry but there isn't. A. Reasonable. Take.

Except destroy it all and salt the earth it grew out of.

From software engineer to Costco cashier in just 5 years. What a r(a)ide!

A satirical infographic titled "THE 'GARTNER HYPE CYCLE' OF EMPLOYABILITY" that plots career trajectories from 2023 to 2028. The vertical axes measure "LINKEDIN DELUSION LEVEL" on the left and "ACTUAL DISPOSABLE INCOME" on the right.

The curve begins in 2023 with the "SOFTWARE ENGINEER" at the "Slope of Enlightenment". It rises to a peak in 2024 labeled "PROMPT ENGINEER (Peak of Inflated Expectations)", illustrated by a wizard hat and a speech bubble saying "I AM A WIZARD".

The line then drops steeply down "THE CLIFF", passing through "VIBE CODER" (a person lounging in a beanbag "Just feeling the code") and "MASTER OF AI AGENTS" (a conductor leading robots). It hits rock bottom in 2027 at the "TROUGH OF DISILLUSIONMENT" marked as "UNEMPLOYED", shown with a LinkedIn logo leaning against a tumbleweed. Finally, the curve levels out in 2028 at the "PLATEAU OF PRODUCTIVITY" as a "COSTCO CASHIER". A footnote at the bottom offers a "Sarcastic Insight" about networking strategy shifting to "Checking receipts for bulk toilet paper".

You can tell if someone is a computering supergenius if their solution to a difficult problem looks like nothing.

Lisp is six functions. Forth is 200 bytes. Unix is just tiny programs and text files. The original web is just a hacked SMTP server sending SGML files. And yet, it does *that*.

The huge, complex stuff--Windows, Java, the modern web--is all the work of mediocre thinkers with big budgets and too little time.

Todd C. Miller has been maintaining the codebase for over 30 years. This is exactly one of those cases where an entire critical infrastructure is held together by the work of a single volunteer who apparently can’t find anyone willing to sponsor him for some financial support.

Some people might know "bash russian roulette":

[ $[ $RANDOM % 6] = 0 ] && rm -rf / || echo "Click"

which generates a random number between 0 and 5 and if it's a zero it deletes all your files.

Running an "agent" like Moltbot is basically that with more climate impact.

A study by Anthropic(!):

"We found that using AI assistance led to a statistically significant decrease in mastery. On a quiz that covered concepts they’d used just a few minutes before, participants in the AI group scored 17% lower than those who coded by hand, or the equivalent of nearly two letter grades. Using AI sped up the task slightly, but this didn’t reach the threshold of statistical significance."

Harvard/MIT tested whether foundation models learn true world models (the underlying structure generating data) by how they adapt to synthetic tasks. Even our best models fail to create these models, instead relying on task-specific heuristics that do not generalize.

Prediction for the potential future:

When the AI coding agent companies are just about to run out of money, down to their last few % raised as none of their customers are actually paying the real cost required to run these services, they pivot and take all of the uploaded code that was willingly sent to them, turn it into thousands of products / services to sell / rent, disconnect the public api endpoints leaving their old customers helpless as they no longer remember how to program "in the raw" and can not understand their own codebases, and compete directly against them putting their own customers all out of business which finally results in a positive income stream and "validation" of the coding agent companies previously over-hyped business valuations.

"Facebook had to borrow $100 billion the other day in order to finance the investment in data centres. And what they’ve tried to do is shift that off balance sheet, so that we don’t see that […] they’ve now run out of cash and they’re borrowing money. And that’s a sure sign that Facebook has over reached itself."

@AyoCaesar talks to economist Ann Pettifor, who predicted the 2008 financial crisis, the AI bubble.
