For those very cold weather winter cyclists who use rechargeable lithium battery devices, like cycling computers, lights, radars, blinkies, etc., do you see significant dropoff in battery life or device performance?

I am still making my way through last week’s #BikeNite but it’s time for our weekly call for questions for the next one:

Next #BikeNite is this Friday at 4pm Pacific standard time (UTC-8)!

This is our weekly call for questions. Reply with any you'd like me to add to the discussion on Friday. Please add the BikeNitePQ hashtag so it's easier to find a Proposed Question. There is room for more!

(BikeNite is a Q&A type discussion on the Fediverse.) #BikeTooter cc @bikenite

@Cyclist @bikenite A5. I am super late! But I thought I'd try to respond to this before reading more replies. There are so many benefits (exercise, environmental, much much less harm to others) but I think the most surprising one to me was the community building that happens.

You're more likely to meet your neighbors, make new friends. Driving feels like seeing your neighborhood through the screen of a television. When you're riding, you can interact, say hell, wave, ring a bell, smell the magnolias..

@mario_angst_sci @danwwilson @wavesculptor @ascentale @bikenite Our driveway is about 20-25% and when you're pulling up kids in a trailer, walking does not help 😭

That's the hill I finally give up and stand and lean forward for, praying I make it to the top without rolling into the grass.

crazy climbs and #ovalChainrings

if you're shoulders touching the handlebars and pedaling like crazy to keep enough speed to balance, cant zig-zag because the rills, then my thought relevant to chainrings was, if I could pedal just that bit slower I'd have more attention-out for all the other stuff going on.

I've got a 3 front set, the smallest of which is the same teeth about as the bottom back. If I could up that to the _same_ teeth as the middle (with 52 top!) but yes you guessed, wild elliptical, it could be like a "winch" different pedaling mode but same cadence as middle. As it is, changing to the bottom on existing front is inevitably accompanied by some feeling of desperation 😆 .

Yes and walking is often a choice I feel good about - particularly if at the point the front wheel goes into flight, but _before_ it all crashes back to the ground sideways.

@ascentale @skyfaller @bikenite I would assume adding a working snowblower would do far more justice (electric-assist would make it easier to push).

@mario_angst_sci @wavesculptor @ascentale @edd @bikenite Walking did help on that, as did zig zagging across the road. But walking was handy when things got VERY sketchy. If you’re ever in Brisbane Australia hit me up. We’ve got some great adventures both near and far from here.

although at 22%, walking also helps I guess 😅😅

@danwwilson @wavesculptor @ascentale @edd @bikenite not really I think, that is much more about body positioning. So what helps is (in the words of an old XC MTB instructor) "Ellbogä abeeee!!!" 😅.

A lot harder to measure but you should think about it in terms of enjoyment rather than time. Going on a long drive to do a ride that is similar to or worse than an easier to get to one is probably not worth it no matter how long you ride after the drive.

Going on a long drive for some unique views, terrain or people to ride with on the other hand might be even if the ride itself is short

@mario_angst_sci @wavesculptor @ascentale @edd @bikenite I was on a 22% climb on the gravel bike the other week and the front wheel just wanted to pop up all the time. Do you think they’d make a difference there?

@RossA @ascentale @bikenite Don't. Rich, the lovely organiser, only really does it via the socials, which I've told him is a bit crap. I even registered a Jennride domain but sorting content is taking forever. There's usually posts on FB, Singletrackworld, and the Bear Bones Bikepacking forums. I'll try to remember to give you a heads up when something shows. It's usually mid-June.

@pete @ascentale @bikenite is there a website for the summer ride? I couldn’t find anything.

#BikeNite Cycle Chat boosted:

@RossA @ascentale @bikenite Do. It's a blast. The perfect combination of a challenging and social nonsense. I've never managed to do the summer edition, but that's been running for a decade now, but done all three winter ones.

A8. After finishing my stationary ride at the gym yesterday we walked out and spotted this fellow sleeping on the grate. He promptly woke up when I mentioned to my wife he was there. Didn't move but we didn't close the distance (about 4 ft) and asked them to stay safe.
