We did see 'health'-associated taxa increase in abundance post-therapy. There seemed to be a persistent difference in diversity between control group and PID group. We also observed interesting correlations with blood absolute #neutrophil counts and certain oral bacteria. This is certainly worth exploring further as these bacteria are part of the 'hedgehog' consortia in the dental plaque - dynamics are relevant for oral health in general. /end

Happy to see this out! We analysed the dental #microbiome of children with #primaryimmune deficiencies underwent non-surgical therapy. Prevalence of gum disease was higher in this group and the aim was to look at longitudinal data to see if therapy modulated the microbiome. 1/

Have you ever been annoyed when heating your oven that it does not tell you when it is hot? there is the little red light of course but who wants to keep going to the kitchen checking that all the time!

With my very rudimentary skills I built a little device from an Arduino that monitors the oven light and sounds a buzzer when the oven is at temperature (i.e. the light turns off). More details and code etc. on my blog: rhizobia.nz/node/65 #Arduino

circuit diagramArduino board wired up as per the circuit diagram. It has a black circular buzzer, a red LED, and a thing that look like a clear LED but is a photo-transistor that detects light. At the bottom is the Arduino circuit board.

Do I know anyone who has recently (past few years) secured a New Investigator #BBSRC Research grant? We are writing one and could really do with an example of what works..
If you do and would be willing to share all or part of the application material the #NeuroESC lab would be eternally grateful πŸ™

Edit: this is what we're applying to: ukri.org/opportunity/bbsrc-new

Edit 2: Thanks to you all we've already got 3 example applications! You are all awesome πŸ€— This will already help a lot, the last thing we would need is one from the most recent call (Jan 2024?) and as a "New Investigator", especially if you are also willing to share the reviewers' comments which are really useful to see what people look for in these applications - DM me if so πŸ™
(It's our first one... lots to learn but not so many opportunities for learning!)

Dr. Rebecca Lancefield (1895 – 1981) studied streptococcal bacteria. Her research laid the foundations for understanding how diseases like strep throat. She was the first woman to became president of the American Association of Immunologists. To honour her significant contributions to bacteriology, DSMZ researchers named the strain Streptomyces lancefieldiae (DSM 40712) after her.

I'm running some tests comparing ANI-mash-dash distances (though using -M for the last, which might defeat the purpose of its inclusion?) across similar microbial genomes.

What are people settling on as a good kmer choice for decent strain level genome distance resolution these days?

I have a big microbial sequencing batch coming up that will require decent methylation calling.

How's ONT vs PacBio on this front? R10's direct methylation detection is exactly what I'm looking for, but curious about first-hand experience from researchers for both platforms.

'Musk then brought in two of his cousins, James and Andrew Musk, to oversee engineering teams. Software engineers were told their code would be reviewed, unusually, on paper. Privacy officers panicked as thousands of sheets, filled with the company’s intellectual property and its users’ personal data, were printed out and carried around the building. Shredders were hastily bought and the engineers had to line up, watched by security guards, to destroy the pages.'
