@jonmsterling They sound pretty well grounded--I mean they are there to learn a skill, and if they do use AI in future, that skill will help them to tell the wheat from the chaff.
Semi-retired programmer. I mean I took a 'blue collar' job to save my sanity, but I can't seem to stop writing code :-)
User of Linux (various) and author of the Wooden Spoon web server, which absolutely nobody uses, not even me :-)
Big fan of open source software, the right to repair, and the #disenshittification of everything.

@jonmsterling @leah Good idea for a song :-)
Marvin droned,
Now the world has gone to bed,
Darkness don't engulf my head,
I can see by infrared,
How I hate the night.
He paused to gather artistic and emotional strength to tackle the next verse.
Now I lay me down to sleep,
Try to count electric sheep,
Sweet dream wishes you can keep,
How I hate the night.
@Lydie They used Crapilot to fix the previous bug.
"Clean Code" — a timeless truth or a myth we keep telling ourselves?
@tastapod and me in conversation on the Modern Software Engineering channel discussing the origins, limitations and implications of clean code
@infobeautiful Ouch!
:-)
Firefox recently updated with an uglier font into the url bar and I was like "why'd they do that", but now I'm starting to notice this same font I think in certain other parts of Android, the clock bar, the copy/paste menu. I don't like it. I can't tell if I'm imagining it.
Silent software updates are literally gaslighting! I think something changed, I can't tell if something changed, I'm doubting my own perceptions and mental capability
I just found this and I just wanted to say thanks #ffmpeg! (screenshot from the Nazi site)
@changoteca
ls -Alh
in my case, but yes :-)
@RealGene @thanetric @GalbinusCaeli @ColmDonoghue @MarkHoltom I've always been fond of base six, which Jan Misali calls "seximal" in his "Every base is base 10".
Honest, kids, with resistance, every *single* *little* *act* helps.
No one act will be enough.
It will take millions of acts, small and large, millions.
But don't quit cuz what you think you can do is too small to matter.
Everything matters.
Do what you can do, when you can do it, where you can do it, how you can do it.
@Shrigglepuss
This is why I like the fediverse. I feel free to like it, to comment. Oh and we can be educated at what I call fediversity :-)
On YouTube, I used to thumbs-up views like this, and comment. Or negative views about Gargoyle and recent USA politics, corruption and pro-fossil lobbying and deception.
After a few times, YT shadow-banned me. I mean it didn't matter whether I commented on a small channel, or one with 3,000,000 subscribers, I'd get no thumbs up or comments, or maybe one. Almost nobody knew I existed.
Experimenting, I changed both my channel names (the long one and the @-shortname) and suddenly I was un-shadow-banned. So now if I want to be seen at all there, I can't say anything anti-Musk, anti-Gargoyle, anti-fossil. Where's the point in that?
@wagenseil @PeterLudemann @GalbinusCaeli @ColmDonoghue @thanetric @MarkHoltom Don't get me started on the furlong-firkin-fortnight system of units, or why my toy OS measures time in microfortnights :-)
@ColmDonoghue @thanetric @MarkHoltom I know, but I was surprised to learn it from other comments in this thread.
@thanetric @MarkHoltom I learn something new every day. In UK (and others?) you sometimes see railway bridges that quote distance in chains. 80 chains to a mile, from memory.
@MarkHoltom Of course they won't say "yards", because those things are only about 10% from metres, and there be dragons :-)
@dsalo Translation :
"It's not much use in general, so it doesn't get used much. Oh, and the economics are so fragile that if we don't advertise like mad everyone goes bust."
@adwright I'm lost now. Last I heard UK, USA and some EU nations gave the HPV vaccine as one of the basic shots for girls and young women.
Has that changed?
I could argue it would be even better if everyone had it, but it looks like a very good start...
