NEXT WEEK ON #ThePlaylist

Because it's a rich seam that won't at all leave me overwhelmed with the sheer number of options, next week's theme is:

Whistling

Y'know, whistling. You just put your lips together and blow.

So, songs about whistling, or featuring whistling. Youse all know the drill by now. Use #ThePlaylistSuggestion so my greedy bot can gobble up all of your juicy suggestions, because otherwise there's a strong likelihood I'll miss you.

Promotional artwork for my radio show.

It's designed to look like the now playing screen on a classic iPod, with the show info on the right side of the screen, and a photo of me on the left.

It details that the show is broadcast on Mondays from 7pm until 9pm UK time.

@DJDarren "Lovely Head" by Goldfrapp please, which I once identified when I worked at HMV from a customer saying "you know what I mean, the car advert with the whistling in it".

@axwax Yeah, that's what I wondered. I just thought it was weird that you can download a static image to upload to your site like Last.fm but it also seems like you can display it as an updating RSS version?

@axwax Oh, I was just looking at the Art Creator section and there's an RSS feed and options to make a grid of albums, so that made me wonder if there's a way of having a grid that updates? Or whether it's as convoluted as Last.fm for that?

@axwax Ooh! Excellent. Does that mean it's possible to display albums in a similar way? Been looking through their "Explore" section too and I like the ability to display albums by colour. That's quite fun.

Curious to know what folks use to keep track of their listening (and what the differences are between services). I'm still using last.fm currently but considering other options as features slowly get removed or altered in a way where they cease to be useful. 😐

And all of them look like album covers for an achingly cool dance music compilation on a niche label. 🙃

@petrescatraian Yeah, their recommendations are still excellent! 🙂

@petrescatraian The one I noticed recently was hiding shout boxes behind a “Join the conversation” button, which seems like a pointless change and I’ve seen a lot of early users lamenting the loss of social features from years ago which I’d sort of forgotten about in the time where I didn’t keep track of my listening. I feel like with a lot of music services owned by corporations though, there’s always a sense that things could change quite dramatically out of nowhere.

@alisynthesis @sknob Just had a quick look and it appears you can import Last.fm stats into ListenBrainz anyway. 🙂

@kidlightbulbs No probs! I remember this topic popping up somewhere ages ago, possibly on Social Music Network (and have thought about changing my own support page to a label club split between a few folks in the future), so it’s cool to see a project like this happening!

@axwax @sknob I think the thing that makes me consider switching is that last.fm is apparently owned by Paramount Skydance and there’s always a chance that something will be messed with that’ll ruin everything because of that ownership - even recently, I noticed that artist shout boxes have been hidden behind another button. The other two options are open source though, right? Does ListenBrainz have social elements and the ability to embed recent listening on your site?

@sknob I didn’t for ages but started back up again as I’ve found I’m listening to more music of late and I lose track of things if I don’t have a record of it somewhere, plus one positive of last.fm is that their recommendations seem better than a lot of the larger music services, like they actually have relevant aliases connected to an artist and/or bands they used to be part of instead of weird (and maybe even fake?) acts. Maybe it’s that human Wiki element still going strong.

I made another thing 🤪

I call it Auxpack: patron subscription packs, for groups of independent artists.

Instead of (or addition to) having your own #patreon, , #bandcamp or whatever subscription offering, band together with artists in your community to form packs that fans can subscribe to. They pay once (meaning one processing fee), and the rest is divvied up amongst the artists in the group.

In closed beta. Check it out at auxpack.club
