When people say Shakespeare isn't relevant to modern life it's good to have people like Sir Ian around to prove them wrong:
I cook, I cherish, I sing, I dance, I DevOps. Old-timer from USENET days (different handle then). Occasional guest podcaster speaking on SFF books (and would also talk happily about SFF audio drama).

Advocacy opportunity 📣 BCCDC is currently assessing BC’s wastewater surveillance program. Do the survey here: https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5bVmczsX2GeocuO
Wastewater testing is an “early warning system” to monitor community illness levels, including surges & new variants. Clinical data (like rising hospitalizations & deaths) are lagging indicators, making wastewater monitoring an essential tool for pandemic preparedness and risk assessments. Unfortunately, BC drastically downgraded their testing program in Sept 2025 - they stopped testing a third of the wastewater treatment plants, reduced sampling to only once a week (it was previously 3 times a week), and reduced sequencing to once every two weeks.
This is our chance to let BC know:
👉 wastewater testing is essential
👉 we don’t want any more cuts
👉 we want them to improve the program!
The survey only takes a few minutes & is anonymous. You can also learn more about BC’s wastewater program here: https://www.bccdc.ca/our-services/programs/wastewater-surveillance

Jennifer Brooks: "An avalanche of outerwear poured in."
“A couple of weeks ago, I was at Whipple, seeing if there was anything I could do,” said Rachel Gerdes, whose Instagram account now directs her 40,000 followers to Haven Watch and other mutual aid groups who are raising funds and supplies for people who are too afraid to leave their homes to shop, work or go to school.
Suddenly, she said, “They released someone in front of the Whipple Building in no winter clothes. It was freezing cold. She was just out in the cold.”
Gerdes approached the shivering woman and asked if she needed help. The woman said she had no way to get home. The light-rail station is half a mile from Whipple. A long way to walk without a coat in January.

@Configures I know, right? It's an example of how the best way to grab my attention as an editor is glorious prose.
@Configures great conversation. Thank you Sarah!

@heatherrosejones Wow, that first story was lovely: aching and sensual.
Fascinating Chicago 1910s race and labor (especially meatpacking) history in the discussion fairly early in this 2022 episode of *The Pink Smoke podcast*: Ep. 97 "The Killing Floor".
Content warning for historic lynching descriptions about 35-40 minutes in. Also: Aesthetic warning for discussion participants' mouth noises (lots of slurpy intakes of breath that were not edited out). But good content if you can deal with all that.
Bonus discussion of *A Rage In Harlem* which they liked and think is under-appreciated, and so do I!

Thinking of my last-minute scramble to enroll in my second major, Philosophy (I'd already fulfilled the requirements), I'm reminded of @sethheasley 's recent *Hugos There* podcast episode on Roger Zelazny's *Doorways in the Sand*, https://hugospodcast.com/podcast/doorways-in-the-sand-by-roger-zelazny-with-bob-morrell/ (the protagonist has been in college for 13 years, switching majors repeatedly to avoid being graduated: loses when they force a doctorate in philosophy on him, since those requirements were less formal, hee hee).
Dr. Richard Nunan, my college advisor, was great in a lot of ways, and also my boss when I was a TA for two semesters for Advanced Symbolic Logic. He and his wife let me crash at their place once when I visited Charleston after college, and they fed me the first veggie-burgers I ever had in my life (mostly lentils; pretty good). We emailed a few times. I wish I'd kept up better with him. I'll send his wife a card, since it looks like I missed his passing, and she might like to hear one of his old students likes to remember him. https://blogs.charleston.edu/filmstudies/2021/04/13/in-memoriam-richard-nunan-professor-of-philosophy-gender-studies-and-film-studies/
