I love hiking and have just completed my first long distance walk. Sadly work and family commitments mean I can't go out hiking as much as I'd like. Sometimes my pug will join me on some of my hikes, but he can't walk too long or he has to be carried.

Other interests include travelling, reading, crocheting, watching Kdramas and learning Korean.

@bergmeister That's good to know.

2026-02-15

@bergmeister Are the paths generally well waymarked? I usually just look at the distance + elevation and calculate my own hiking time as I am familiar with my and my son's pace, but thanks for the warning.

@bergmeister Thanks, that's a great tip. Have bookmarked the site.

@bergmeister Oh thank you, that's very helpful!

My son really wants to go hiking in Norway this summer so I'm looking at 7 day hikes. The SignaTUR Tafjordfjella looks good and not too challenging (also since we can stay in lodges so won't have such a heavy backpack) but does anyone have a recommendation for a maps app that can work with the GPX? Is OSM good for Norway? Obviously we will also have a paper map and I know it's signposted as well, but I always feel better with a GPX backup.

9. Blue Sisters by Coco Mellor

This book tore my hearts into shreds, so beautiful! It's about how three sisters deal with the death of their sister a year on. They were all so different from each other but I loved their sisterly bond and how they were able to make their lives better ultimately.

I am wondering whether the writer suffers from endometriosis, because her description of it was spot on (and a little triggering I must admit).

This stirs a thought. About how we've been lol-saying, "Oh everyone wants privacy but then shares everything on social media. What a bunch of fools!"

And while it's true that we've been tricked into giving everything to them willingly, and that's worth considering, it skips over the deeper nature of consent.

When I posted to Twitter or Facebook, I only ever intended to share my thoughts with thousands of "my closest friends" and whoever they shared it with and whoever searched for it.

Now that might seem like this behavior says I don't care about privacy. But I chose to be public with real humans sitting at their computers or on their phones looking for things to read. They are who I was giving permission to. NOT to the algorithm. NOT for purposes of tracking me. NOT for the capitalist voyeur to data mine.

They turned the enthusiastic Yes! into a begrudging yes-because-I-can't-say-no after making me dependent on them. And that's quite a lot like some abusive relationships I've been in.

This is exactly like bodily consent when I used to wear sexy clothes at conventions. I gave consent for people to view me and admire me, to complement me, and even to initiate flirting if I reciprocated. But no where in that expectation was I consenting to be harassed or touched.

I think it's worth revisiting this as we begin to shape our new world. We could have every social network, every doorbell camera, every OS, whether centralized or not, regulated with this model of consent in mind.

We're not helpless. We haven't agreed to give anything up just because we post pictures of our breakfast. They don't have to be allowed to take whatever they want.

Being extremely online isn't blanket consent.

And we can take that back.

@ItsThatDeafGuy Pretty much daily I dream of chucking it all in and go hiking around the world but sadly I have responsibilities and no money. Cycling is not for me but a year long hike would be awesome.

Apparently Saturday will be the only dry day in weeks and weeks of rain, so I will definitely try to get out for a hike. Work has been insanely busy and I need a break and some time out in nature.

@allysseriordan @thegiddystitcher I occasionally need to go to the Netherlands and I always save up my EU post for when I go there. It's ridiculously expensive otherwise.

8. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

I loved The Martian by Andy Weir so decided to pick this one up. It came highly recommended by many of my reader friends and they were all right. It's really fun(ny), engaging and educational. I don't understand half the physics in the book but I loved reading about it anyway. I sort of saw the end coming but that in no way detracted from the fun of reading it. Can highly recommend it!

7. One Corpse too Many by Ellis Peters

The second book in the Brother Cadfael series and even better than the first. I love it when a character you really suspect at first turns out to be the hero of the story.

6. A Morbid Taste of Bones by Ellis Peters

This is the first in the murder mystery series featuring Father Cadfael, a Benedictine monk living in the 12th century. Father Cadfael is not a typical monk, having come to the habit late in life, and he's witty and astute. This was a fun introduction to the characters and settings and it has a healthy dose of history as well. I'm reading the second book in the series next.

Son number 2 is checking out unis now so we're once again in Eindhoven, this time for the technical university. It was good catching up with our oldest yesterday and it would be fun if both boys ended up studying in the same city but we have other unis to check out in March so we'll see.
Yesterday it was dumping rain but today we woke up with a beautiful blue sky. Which is good considering how much walking we'll be doing today.

@JillsJoy Don't encourage me! The US is off the table for now for obvious reasons but once things become safe again I may add this to the list.

2026-02-04

This year I started a bucket list of trails I want to walk/hike before I die and it's growing by the week. Quite a few of them are realistic as they are in the UK, but I keep adding more unrealistic trails on it. You never know where life will take you though so I keep on dreaming.
