De grensovergang tussen Gaza en Egypte bij Rafah is deze maand voor zeer geringe aantallen personen opengegaan. De Palestijnse journalist Rita Baroud reflecteert op het psychologische effect van afwachten zonder te weten of je de grens ooit zult kunnen oversteken.

De grensovergang is niet gewoon een poort. Het is een ruimte tussen twee levens. Een breuk die twee tijdlijnen van elkaar gescheiden houdt. Een splitsing tussen mensen die weg willen om te overleven en mensen die terug willen omdat ze nu eenmaal verlangen naar het gevoel dat ze ergens thuishoren, ook al is dat thuis veranderd in een open wond.

Aan de Palestijnse kant werd de grensovergang van Rafah op dinsdag 2 februari onder extreem beperkende voorwaarden heropend, nadat hij sinds de overname door de Israëlische troepen in mei 2024 zo goed als gesloten was gebleven.
