“Artists are free to exercise their right of free speech in whatever way they choose”
The Berlin Film Festival is in crisis after international filmmakers openly condemned Israel’s ongoing attacks on Palestinians.
Syrian-Palestinian director Abdallah al-Khatib condemned Germany for being “partners in the genocide in Gaza” while accepting the Perspectives first film prize for Chronicles From the Siege.
Lebanese director Marie-Rose Osta also denounced Israeli bombings of Palestinian and Lebanese children during her acceptance speech for the Golden Bear prize.
The speeches sparked outrage from German officials and Israel’s ambassador, revealing the tension between a pro-Israel political establishment and artists using their platform to expose the truth about Gaza.
The festival has called an emergency meeting to discuss its “future direction,” amid reports that its American director, Tricia Tuttle, could face dismissal for supporting Palestinian voices.
Tuttle defended the right of artists to speak freely, insisting that cultural institutions must allow creators to confront injustice without censorship or political pressure, especially amid the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza.
“You Can’t Wage a War on a People Under Occupation”
UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese stressed that labeling the situation in Gaza as a conventional “war” is legally and morally misplaced.
She explained that Palestinians in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, and East Jerusalem are a population under occupation, meaning a different legal framework applies, not the framework of war between equal states or armies.
Albanese further noted that even during so-called ceasefires, Palestinians continued to be killed, more than 150 between January and March during the first truce, and over 600 since.
While the scale of killing may fluctuate, she questioned how Gaza can be described as at peace when killings persist and destruction continues.
NEW | Israel Responsible for Two-Thirds of Record Journalist Killings in 2025: CPJ
A report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reveals that 129 journalists and media workers were killed in 2025, the deadliest year on record, with Israeli occupation forces responsible for two-thirds of the killings.
According to the New York-based watchdog, 86 journalists were killed by Israeli fire, the vast majority of them Palestinians reporting from Gaza.
CPJ also found that Israel accounted for 81% of cases it classified as “intentionally targeted” killings, describing the pattern as unprecedented in modern records. The organization noted that the real toll is likely higher due to Israel’s blockade on foreign media access to Gaza and severe restrictions on verification.
CPJ stated that the Israeli occupation military has carried out more targeted killings of journalists than any other military since the group began documenting such attacks over three decades ago.

An Israeli court overturned the conviction of officer Yitzhak Sofer, who assaulted Palestinian journalist Mustafa Alkharouf in East Jerusalem in December 2023, citing that Sofer suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to his service during the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation.
Although video footage clearly showed Sofer beating and kicking Alkharouf, who required hospitalization, the Jerusalem Magistrate Court replaced his initial conviction with 300 hours of community service.
The judge emphasized Sofer’s clean record and long service, arguing that maintaining the conviction could cause disproportionate harm.
The ruling comes amid a sharp rise in attacks and arrests of journalists in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, with Reporters Without Borders labeling Israel “the worst enemy of journalists.”

Palantir has worked with the Israeli Defense Ministry and ICE, GE Aerospace produces engines for Israeli military jets, and Caterpillar’s equipment has been used in demolitions of Palestinian property.
