Honig gilt hier seit der Antike als wichtiges Nahrungs- und Heilmittel; schon Aristoteles beschrieb die Imkerei als göttliche Kunst. Noch ist die Bienenzucht für viele griechische Familien ein Bestandteil des Lebensunterhalts.

Solche eckigen Bienenkästen (Tunnelstöcke) aus getrockneten Pflanzenstängeln bilden in Sizilien die traditionellen Bienenwohnungen. Diese langen, quadratischen Röhren werden entlang von Mauern in Reihen aufgestellt und nur von vorne zugänglich gemacht. Sie passen zum trockenen mediterranen Klima und werden mit der einheimischen sizilianischen Schwarzen Biene genutzt, die hitze- und trockenheitsresistent ist.
