@ernmander There's a lot of technical stuff I like about the ublue distros (Bluefin, Bazzite, Aurora, ucore) and Bazzite in particular for gaming. I'll probably ditch all things atomic/immutable once I encounter another issue.

For instance: if Tuba doesn't work out of the box with playback of the videos you post on Mastodon, I give up and will never use Silverblue or any other atomic distro again.

Layering fatigue: it's real in 2026...

Replaced Fedora Silverblue with Bazzite on the old 'reXbox' (Dell Optiplex 7020, 8Gb RAM, GT 1030).

Only changed the wallpaper for now, but will probably remove some/all Gnome extensions.

@ernmander It wasn't me. I don't exist there either.

@ernmander From your experience, do you also notice a shift/trend towards KDE as flagship for most distros?

2026-02-19

@ernmander I did the same, but noticed there's not much recent good content on YT. Ultramarine has dropped under the radar the last 2 years.

@ernmander @killyourfm In that sense Nick from the Linux Experiment is the slightly bearded French version.

2026-02-19

@ernmander It's basically the same as Fedora Workstation. I only tested the live ISO in a VM, but for me that was enough to consider adoption...

I'm very impressed by Ultramarine / Gnome 43. It has some really nice extras. @ernmander Would recommend to give this a try.

- Cool boot logo
- Nice default wallpaper
- Pop Shell extension (tiling)
- Codecs + RPM Fusion pre-installed
- "Terra" repo
- Flathub for flatpaks

Considering to switch to this. Fresh install.

@ernmander I'm also reminded that I really like the Fedora package repositories. Maybe I'll give something like Ultramarine another spin, but I'll always return to base, which is Fedora/Gnome...

2026-02-18

@ernmander I've only just installed in a VM to try out the installer. Very easy and convenient.

Mostly interested in stock Gnome without Fedora, but quickly realised that I don't really like the set of pre-installed applications for CachyOS + missing some integrated Gnome shell stuff (Software Center).

Similar to EndeavourOS. Better suited for KDE. Debian/Gnome was more to my liking and I guess Arch is not for me, unless I go full tiling WM with Hyprland or something.

Damnit, @ernmander, we're not supposed to play around with Linux after work.

@ernmander Looks nice and clean. Similar to Pantheon.

@ernmander Dash-2-Dock? What else? It's true for any vanilla Gnome by the way.

#Fedora Workstation snapshot. No flatpaks, just RPM and PWA (#Brave) for applications. Thunderbird is new.

@ianspy1 x220 it is. It has won by a single vote :) I'll start working on it when the winter is over.

2026-02-05

@ianspy1 And by trying I mean testing it for a year or so.

2026-02-05

@ianspy1 I'll probably will try it either on my corebooted Chrultrabook (runs Debian/Gnome now and will become a Nixbook) and/or on my Thinkpad x220, which currently runs the latest Omarchy.

It's more a matter of switching cost (time investment vs. benefits) as Fedora Workstation has been perfectly fine for me for the last 6 years, apart from some regressions during Fedora 42 (firmware, kernel).

2026-02-05

The big squatch reminded me that maybe #NixOS is something for me, but I think I've become so attached to my faith and trust in #Fedora (specifically the package repository and security), that it's hard for me to even consider it as as an option.

I do like the idea though of having a stable atomic desktop Linux for the "non-daily drivers" machines I use, which are either running #Debian or #Silverblue.
