@dbattistella Seriously though. The audacity (and stupidity) of claiming that a victims of nuclear bombing event counts as apolitical.

@Tattooed_Mummy It's basically the same sort of legal action the governments took decades ago to try and prevent eco groups from organizing against deforestation and other issues.

@thenewsdesk @top-stories-in-news-thenewsdesk I'm still confused on what exactly the United States' argument is on why Palestine shouldn't be recognized as a country.

Biden ostensibly claims he supports a 2 state solution and this would accomplish that. He's not going to get Israel to agree to recognize Palestine, they've made that entirely clear.

@gulovsen It tells you that these same older people would be saying the same thing to Vietnam protesters and Civil Rights protesters.

“We do not need allies more devoted to order than to justice.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

@jalefkowit I would much rather help all the kids that want to escape from those towns, escape from the crushing weight of both poverty and the terrible backwards ideas forced upon them by their parents.

Everyone who wants to get out should get the assistance they need to do so. That's my stance.

2024-04-25

@jalefkowit Hmm, i wasn't expecting to be so mixed on the article.

Because Andreessen's stance is such trash and I only feel bad for all the people stuck in those small towns, unable to escape because of money or other reasons.

But then I have to confront the author's idolation of small towns and the small mindedness and terrible aspects of humanity they preserve.

The "legend, lore" and all the rest they provide is largely bigotry and other things we absolutely shouldn't be preserving.

In addition to reducing CO2 output by our industries, a variety of different efforts to improve carbon capture technologies continues.

One team at the Max Planck Institute have been trying to develop a synthetic CO2 fixation pathway they can apply to bacteria and scale up.

They have successfully improved their THETA cycle by two orders of magnitude to convert CO2 into acetyl-CoA.

@jascha Hmm, I must not be using the right keywords, because I can't find anything on this...fossil statue?

I am also very intrigued to learn more.

@toplesstopics @georgetakei The Gamecube came out in 2001. There are people born on the day it came out that have been able to drink alcohol in the US for 2 years now.

So...yeah, that's retro.

2024-03-11

@georgetakei If it's more than 15 years old, then you're edging into an entirely new generation of people reaching adulthood since that time point.

So I'd consider anything older than that vintage.

DeLill Nasser (1929-2000) was the program director for the eukaryote genetics division of the National Science Foundation and today's new Wikipedia article.

She was instrumental in getting the Arabidopsis genome project underway and her name pops up most nowadays thanks to the scholarship award in her name that's helped fund dozens of student's conference and research presentations.

Another Giant in Obstetrics and Gynecology for our new Wikipedia article today.

Linda Giudice is a massive presence in the field of infertility research and an authority on the menstrual cycle and endometriosis.

Much of what we know of genetics on the topic is thanks to her work, along with the negative impacts environmental pollution has on women's fertility and miscarriage rates.

And her article doesn't even have anywhere near her complete repertoire and film catalogue. I had to give up in the middle of 1914, she was just in so many silent films.

Unless I wanted to spend multiple weeks tracking everything down, I had to stop at some point.

But hopefully there's enough there to intrigue and inform you about some of the earliest years of the motion picture industry.

Let's head back in time, 100+ years back. Today's newly made Wikipedia article is theater and silent film actress Velma Whitman.

Active from 1905 through 1920, Mrs. Whitman did an absolute ton of well-regarded comedic theater throughout the US, a new one every week!

Then she went into the entirely new field of silent motion pictures, becoming a massive and prolific star there as well.

A different area of fascinating accomplishment, this new Wikipedia article is on Aboriginal artist Arkeria Rose Armstrong.

Her unique ochre and dots storytelling style, a combination of her Yorta Yorta grandfather and Gamilaraay grandmother's methods, that features the landscapes of Australia has been shown prominently in Bendigo, Victoria, but also in art galleries across the Netherlands.

Another towering titan of the National Science Foundation for this week's newly created Wikipedia article.

Machi Dilworth is a Japanese-American plant biologist who has been massively influential in projects involving Arabidopsis genome sequencing and everything else involving the model organism at the NSF.

At the same time, she has pioneered efforts to increase the amount of Japanese women in STEM fields.

@Maggotlaw Who's the author and who's the person in charge of images (the editor?)?

I always feel it's best to call these people out directly and not just the publication they're writing for.

A Giant in their field for this week's new Wikipedia article

Mary Lake Polan is an obstetrician and gynecologist who did massive work in the 70's through the 90's, promoting understanding of infertility treatments and the very new medical option called in-vitro fertilization

Her 1988 medical mystery novel, Second Seed, showcased in-depth terms and tech to de-mystify the general public on this new medical marvel
