One of the worst things about modern software is constantly being experimented on. I don’t want features appearing and disappearing, buttons moving, and copy changing every day or two as various A/B tests run to see if they can squeeze a statistically significant 0.01% more engagement out of me.

@danielpunkass I have a bad habit of assuming that someone else has surely reported any bug I run into (unless I'm in a beta).

@siracusa (Also, I know there's one on eBay right now, but it's clearly going to go for more than I am willing to spend on this silly hobby...)

@siracusa A BeBox is my white whale of retro computing hardware. I have owned NeXTs (several), SGIs, Suns, of course many, many Macs, a DEC Alpha, a (small) VAX. But never a BeBox.... I did run BeOS back then, but it was on a Mac (actually a Power Computing clone, which I am slightly ashamed of).

@atpfm Oh, are we sharing embarrassing pictures of our dorm rooms?

Photo of a very, very messy dorm room, with a Mac, a CRT TV, and piles of books and clutter.

@dmoren Yes, same here. Very frustrating.

@marcoarment I have to wonder if you find chrome faster just because you haven’t been using it as much and it has less cruft on your machine. I use both roughly equally and have for years. I notice no difference in speed. FWIW I run zero extensions except 1Password.

@atpfm you gave me an idea. ATP tier list: inventions. The printing press, the transistor, smartphones, social networks, AI…

Remember when we needed Flash to watch most video on the web? Those were the days…

Is it a conspiracy that all of the manufacturers of power stations have websites that are terrible in the same way, and make it nearly impossible to understand what all of the options are?

@hotdogsladies Is it weird that I can picture exactly where I was, and what I was doing, when I listened to this episode?

@atpfm I've been off of Twitter since Elon took over, so I'm with you. But it's more than just "change is hard." In this recent ice storm disaster in TN (hundreds of thousands without power for days), I was forced back to Twitter (read-only; I didn't post at all) just to get the most updated info. Despite all efforts, none of the supposed replacement platforms have actually replaced Twitter for that purpose (and many other purposes).

@hotdogsladies Actually, when I first worked at Amazon in the late 90s, we'd let people send in checks to pay, because a lot of people were still afraid of submitting credit card info over the web...

@hotdogsladies I remember being very excited to order a 14.4 kbps modem from one of those catalogs (maybe it was Mac Connection?). Hard to believe there was a time that I'd actually call someone on the phone to order something. And if I recall correctly, you could mail in a check or money order to pay for it, though I'm sure I used a credit card.

@timonus I'm going to sound like a fogey, but that's how I feel every time I handle the iPhone 4 I have in my drawer of old devices. Peak iPhone form factor (and I liked the OS better back then too).

@manton Especially frustrating if you really need it to sync quickly for some reason. More than once, I have had to Airdrop between my own devices because I couldn't convince it to sync right away.

@daringfireball This is not worth upgrading to Tahoe for (I learned the hard way), but the one thing I do like is having the Messages app respect the unknown sender and spam filtering. It's painful to have all of those keep going into the main messages inbox on the machine I left on Sequoia.
