#OnThisDay, 24 Feb 1968, Jocelyn Bell Burnell - along with her male supervisor and three other men - published a paper confirming the discovery of pulsars. She had built the array, picked up the signal and argued it was not an anomaly. Hewish received the Nobel prize for it in 1974: Bell Burnell did not.

In 2018 Bell Burnell received a Β£3m prize for her work. She's used it to set up a foundation to improve the diversity in STEM.

POLL: Fedi people, do you have a website or blog or personal wiki or some other kind of online Thing That You Control Yourself that other people can find you on that isn't paid for / maintained by someone else, meaning YOUR THING is at a web address like you.whatever, not at you.someonelse.whatever or someoneelse.whatever/you, I mean are you paying the tenner a year or however much for a whole-ass domain name all for yourself (or for you and a small group of IRL friends), and if not do you want to be, THE POLL, and here is the guidance and elaboration on options:

1) No and I don't want my own site, Fedi and/or other social media scratches that itch for me just fine and I'm content with this arrangement

2) No, but I have a Vague Yearning or a Curious Itch and I wonder sometimes what it would be like, but so far it's just feelings and not plans, I haven't taken any concrete steps towards making My Own Website a real thing that exists, but I'm comfortable saying that I would probably *like* it to exist some day when I'm ready

3) No, but more of a Not Yet than a no; maybe I've bought a domain name and not put anything on it yet, or I haven't yet bought a domain name but I'm researching my options (whether I do it in a lazy few minutes here and there or in focused making-notes sort of study, both count for the purposes of this question), I've spent some time thinking about this With Intent, and I feel less "*wouldn't* this be nice" and more "*won't* this be nice" about this endeavour

4) Yes I own at least one domain name, come on Dan this is Fedi, and at least one of my domains even have websites or services associated with them

BOOST THIS TOOT to get an INCREDIBLY INACCURATE IMPRESSION of how many people have and/or want websites and a more accurate picture of how many people On Fedi have and/or want websites

How am I to know whether I'm suckling on sweet, delicious, feminine gingerbread breasts or being FORCED to perform a disgusting, perverted fellatio on a big, fat, juicy, swinging gingerbread penis if those WOKE LIBTARDS at Asda refuse to gender their biscuitsβ€½

@randahl What to do:

- Don't visit. Our country is not safe to visit, for anyone. Just stay away.

- Don't buy our products. If you see that a product is made here, don't buy it, unless you absolutely have to. Actively seek alternatives, from other places. This puts economic pressure on the regime that they cannot ignore, and which enrages their supporters.

- Speak truth to power, and speak it clearly and boldly. Don't mince words. Speak plain truth, so that others will hear.

- Keep it up.

Pretty much anything by the Muppets.

Hear me out, if you will. Have you *ever* heard the theme song and not sung along, even if just a tiny bit?

Kermit's its not easy being green is a journey in itself.

Their version of Bohemian Rhapsody? Perfection. Animal saying mamma in so many ways... Love it.

Try it. And I do apologize for getting that song stuck in your head but not for the smile it'll cause :)

I remember as a small boy talking with my grandfather, a farmer, in the 1960s. He knew then that the chemical farming everybody was adopting was poisoning the land - he could already observe the disappearance of wildlife and degradation of the soil. But he felt trapped. He was making good money at last, having lived through two world wars and the great depression.

My guess is that many, perhaps most farmers feel the same - they know, and scientists certainly know, that the way forward is regenerative agriculture - but they are objectively trapped in the big agribusiness chemical and fossil fuel race to the bottom.

The EU, and any responsible government, knows that they have to regulate the excesses of big business, or it will ruin both the soil and public health - but the regulatory approach is also a trap, often counter-productive, because big business is much better able to employ staff to deal with complex regulation - or staff to disseminate misinformation.

Better than ever-stricter regulation would be to trust and incentivise small farmers - properly fund them to move to regenerative agriculture, and away from meat - subsidise and promote their produce to outcompete big agribusiness.

I've not dabled with telescopes or #astrophotography for a while, and recently treated myself to a #dwarf3 #smartTelescope.

After the inevitable, and very frustrating, period of overcast skies with any new equipment, including due to the Dwarf's solar capabilities daytime cloudlessness to the North only, here is first light. Suburban sky with heavy light pollution, Bortle 6/7, but the dwarf had no difficulty calibrating even if I could only see a handful of stars.

The Andromeda Galaxy, our nearest neighbour to the Milky Way, just 2.5 million light years away, so this is how it looked when early humans were using flints.

I'm quite pleased with this first effort, basically using the suggested parameters and the built-in processing. Very pleased as to how much is built into the small package. Much more to learn and definitely a cosmic hobby.

At the edge of the map, where the sea mutters old secrets, the Lighthouse keeps watch.
Dogs on patrol. Circuits humming. Logs written by hand and heart.
No algorithms shouting here, just a steady beam, turning patiently,
reminding the lost that calm still exists… if you know where to look.

Hi, you can call me Rose. I try to replace doom-scrolling with reading books. Mostly fantasy and sci-fi, but I also enjoy books about plants.

I'm judging the book by its cover and also people by what they read, so feel free to check what I read and my thoughts about them in #RoseReads tag. You can also find me in Storygraph app.thestorygraph.com/profile/

Not a native English speaker, so I apologise for grammar mistakes in my posts.

On 23 Dec 2025, #UKgovt lost a huge #Judo contest. #GretaThunberg used the #UKgovt's own power against it.

In July, the UK banned #PalestineAction as "#terrorist". Arrests for supporting PA total ~2,500, mostly older people. #Greta is the latest.

UK public opinion opposes the arrests. But Greta's fame takes the disdain global.

If Greta is convicted, the UK globally looks cruel. If she is acquitted or uncharged, it globally looks weak.

The UK govt has trapped itself, with no way out. #ukpol

Against a black background, a photo of Greta Thunberg is overlaid with prison bars. On the black background, the capitalised headline above the photo reads "THE TRIAL OF GRETA THUNBERG".

Below the photo, in lower case, is written the phrase "accused of terrirism for holding a paper sign".
