did my civic duty today:
went to a local donut shop
noticed they had a new ring camera up.
i ask the nice hispanic girl behind the counter "hey you know ice can see through that ring camera, right?"
she goes UHHHH NO WTF I HAVE ONE AT HOME
"tear it out of the wall. yank the power. ring gives ice free access to those"

This internet privacy bullshit isn't going to stop until people start treating kids and teens like human beings with agency that can take care of themselves if they are taught the skills needed to do so, and that people recognize that "innocence" is a tool of control that should be destroyed as soon as possible.

Each time a new privacy-invasive
feature like facial scanning is implemented, if people in majority comply and accept to use it, it will soon become normality, and other options will be marginalized or even removed entirely.

If each time a new privacy-invasive
feature is implemented people opted to refuse it, it would soon be discontinued.

Each individual opposition to privacy-invasive features matters.

It is an act of self-protection but,
perhaps even more importantly,
it is also an act of protest.

A protest against the normalization of mass surveillance and the loss of privacy rights.

The fact that there are other cameras around doesn't mean that more cameras or additional scanning is not making things even worse.

If we do not refuse,
if we do not fight for our privacy rights,
we will lose them all.

For a vibes-based cult of personality, itโ€™s the kiss of death for a thought like โ€œTrump killed Epsteinโ€ to become a mainstream refrain.

Itโ€™s an exit ramp from Trumpism.

Tiny reminder that it's important
to boost posts on Mastodon!

Liking only will not help a post being seen more. Boosting will! :boost_ok: โœจ

Boost the posts you want others to see. Add hashtags to your posts to help others find them.

This is the Fediverse way :mastodon:

@sayonaraminasan There is a way to mute someone's boosts without muting their original posts, for people who prefer that. People who don't like boost can simply use this mute-boost feature.

Personally, I greatly enjoy all of the boosts! And have discovered so many amazing content and people from other's boosts! :boost_ok: :ablobcatrainbow:

A close up of a plastic orange phone handset (old school) plugged into a MacBook Air, both of them placed on a dark walnut coffee table. The handset looks like it's from the 1980s, curly plastic cord included, but it has a USC-C interface!

Been doing some writing for an upcoming DnD (or more likely some other TTRPG system) campaign I wanna run.

Basically no immediate clue on the plot yet, but I've got an interesting setting and general mood for the world. (AKA plucked and stolen from 2 or 3 pieces of media that I like)

Spent like an hour or two with 16 Wikipedia tabs open, while writing stuff out.

Man, I forgot how much I've missed this haha.

May this find you in your time of need

Picture of an old warrior, probably a viking based on the helmet design but I'm not a "warrior guy" so I don't know. He's got a beard and a helmet going down over his eyes, but no horns, which are not historically accurate to vikings but are still pretty cool.

Either way, text over the image says in four bursts:

Pick your battle.
Pick fewer battles than that.
Put some battles back.
That's still too many battles.

"Without leaks we wouldn't know about ICE claiming authority to enter homes without warrants, DHS baselessly labeling protesters as domestic terrorists," or "ICE surveillance tools pulling from vast pools of data," FPF's Seth Stern told Axios.

@r_alb haven't used this one yet, but I've recently been doing some research into the more direct ways data brokerage is being used, so here's a potential option that might be a bit more visceral to folks who see this all as very theoretical:

> Would you be willing to share your financial statements with Amazon before they decide what price to offer for a product? (Instacart is currently doing this)

> What about sharing those statements with a potential employer before you both decide on your salary, that way he can low-ball you based on how badly you need to take the job? (Uber is doing this, as are all the gig work nursing apps, except it's happening for *each shift* since there is no fixed wage on these apps)

This is (one of *many*) of the end results of privacy invasions allowing the data industry to thrive unregulated. It's being used to make very real and consequential decisions that effect you personally. And that's not to mention what would happen if an individual were able to find this data leaked somehow on the dark web.

got a new shirt yesterday. i think itll be appreciated by fedi. cc @ari@fedi.arimelody.space

tshirt with a semi truck on it and the text "I DROP BIG LOADS"

@DJGummikuh @alice Compose key? Is that something common on non-US keyboards? Or is it a Mac key? My ThinkPad only has Ctrl, Shift, Alt, and Caps Lock.

Maybe I ought to just set up my own keybinds, I'm sure it can't be too hard on Linux

A picture of (i believe NYPD) jovially standing on a sidewalk in front of a bank, coincidentally next to a sign that reads, "We're not for everyone. Just the 1% that matters."

The photo was tweeted by Diego Lopez who wrote: Does anyone know who took this photo because it deserves and award

@alice @DJGummikuh any idea how to type them on desktop/Linux (on a standard Mastodon instance)?

I guess I could just copy and paste from somewhere maybe.
