The argument for putting CCTV everywhere was that it would make us safer. Now it turns out victims and police rely on footage and it isn’t even there. Where recordings are actually being made, some are retained for just 48 hours. What’s the point? It seems we’ve reached the point where Sainsbury’s can employ facial recognition to stop £10 shop thefts but we can’t have meaningful CCTV coverage of known physical and sexual assault/harassment hotspots. Tells you a lot about capitalism’s priorities
