TIL fbcondecor, the FrameBuffer CONsole DECORation linux module is dead.

This is sad, I came back to linux thinking I could have a spiffy TTY again. :<

Back in the day, I used fbcondecor to set a custom-crafted background image and free an area on the screen where a custom tool written in C rendered resource usage graphs.

Might legitimately have been the most fancy TTY of all time and by the looks of it probably will be for the foreseeable future. :/

MS Teams constantly "correcting" my spelling to capitalize German words that are invalid to capitalize is like a microcosm of "AI" bullshit. Burns compute only to break things that weren't broken and creates more effort for undoing its "fixes".

Doing nothing would be a literal improvement over "AI".

The Epstein files have been updated; it now consists of nearly 430 GB of data and 1,500,000 files.

Because the Department of Justice appears to have removed individual documents and the .zip archives for the Epstein files, @ddosecrets is now the best place to get all of the data in bulk.

I think way more than I should about Sam Altman calling ChatGPT a "genius-level intelligence" that's an "expert in everything" in the context of asking it how to raise his kids.

Those kids are gonna end up *so* messed up.

Did PCB substrates get materially worse?

I've been noticing that more modern RAM as well as M2 drives have a substrate that seems substantially lighter and feels like it'd break much easier, almost like paperboard…

Bitte was? Wer in der Szene würde denn freiwillig für so 'nen Hansel arbeiten?

Oder ist das so wie dieses cyber competence center der deutschen Polizeien, wo sie jahrelang niemand ansatzweise fähigen gefunden haben? 🤔

Tiny, powerful and efficient – this is like some holy trifecta type shit this tech manages to pull off and I cannot overstate how big this "boring" technology actually is.

Unlike AI pipedreams fucking everything else over for some prophesied future payoff that's actually impossible to achieve, this will bring actual change. Quietly, in the background and without most people even noticing.

This offers a big increase of power generation efficiency for essentially all types of power plants (with the exception of PV, wind and water) because those are currently all using steam turbines.

Like, virtually *every single powerplant on the planet* can get a high double-digit percentage increase in efficiency.

More power out of the same plants – and for a physical footprint of the turbines that's around 10% that of equivalently powerful steam turbines.

The advent of supercritical CO² turbines is probably the single most impactful technological change right after photovoltaics becoming the cheapest source of electricity.

I think it tends to fall by the wayside outside of engineering enthusiast circles because it's boring technology, but it deserves at least as much hype as any fusion tech development – probably even moreso because we now have *actual, productive deployments* of it.
