Ok, unnecessary embellishment by the post, but I applaud the commentator to speak about this frankly.

In fact, the people who do love you are precisely the ones who will tell you when you're doing it wrong. Everyone else either doesn't care about you at all, or has already written you off as a total loss. You want love? Put in the effort. That's love.

Roman elites drank from leaded cups because it made water sweeter. Radiation was thought at one time to have healing properties, so people would add uranium to their drinking water. Glowing dishes are still a collectors item. After the discovery of x-rays, shoe stores started installing them and using them on kids feet to size shoes. Lead was added to gasoline to improve engine performance, and paint to make it whiter. We all know about asbestos and DDT.

We look back at all of this and think, "how could people have been so incompetent back then?" Some of these things caused irreparable harm in their generation, some continue to cause harm today almost 100 years later.

If you wonder that, look at the whole #LLM thing and you have your answer.

When talking about the energy consumed by LLMs don't be fooled by arguments focusing solely on the direct power consumption of these models, because they are externalizing a lot of it. Browsers are now doing proof-of-work calculations to access many websites, because websites need to protect themselves from AI scrapers. That takes power! Let that sink in: every computer, tablet or phone on earth is now consuming more power *every time it accesses a webpage* because of "AI".

Something snapped into place in my mind. There is an anti-AI position that has absolutely nothing to do with luddism, or any other anti-tech position.

AI is cognitive suburbanization.

Think about it. Architecting everything so that I can't do even the most basic thing without gratuitously using a big, bloated, planet-destroying energy hog- one that *in theory* saves time, but actually just wastes it. Reducing all my options to the same generic, regurgitated, cookie cutter slop.

Some folks have interesting posts but also spam my timeline with a lot of posts, so when following somebody, I would like to be able to choose:

1. No reposts (this is possible)
2. Only top posts: Hide all posts that have less than the average engagement (likes and reposts) at th time of reading
3. Random 10%: Using a random generator, filter out 90% of their posts and only show about 10%
4. Follow fully (as it’s default now)
