Monthly listening, January 2026: Kuniyuki Takahashi
Kicking off the year by sampling some of the rich output on Mule Musiq and elsewhere.
Happy to get back to posting on Multichannel again. I'm sharing examples of split screen in various media and other projects that foreground the use of multiple audiovisual layers. Thanks to filmmaker Julie Talen for the term "multichannel" to describe such works.

Lincoln Fong, longtime collaborator with Cocteau Twins, has a YouTube account where he's uploading some absolute treasures.
2025 was a tough year and I think I sought comfort for monthly listening. Looking forward to more discoveries in 2026.
there'll never be a replacement for being in the same place w/ others who are performing/creating/expressing/sharing their art.
not ever.
I went over there to see if Ed Handley and Andy Turner had said anything in the wake of Ken Downie's passing.
The Black Dog shared on Bluesky that founding member Ken Downie has passed away. Maker of some of my favorite music, particularly his releases together with Ed Handley and Andy Turner of Plaid. Rest in peace.
Looking back on 2025 and looking forward to 2026, in the words of Autechre.
Monthly listening, December 2025: Oneohtrix Point Never
The couple of times in the past when I tried to listen to OPN, it left me cold. (I did enjoy that Ford & Lopatin album.) I'm going to give it another good shot.
Monthly listening, November 2025: K-LONE
Good to listen to something new. After all these years, I sometimes still forget to listen to something new.
I seem to be getting more not less anxious about going to the dentist as I age, but at least this time their x-ray machine kept playing the first three notes in the melody from Goz Quarter off Autechre's Envane. Silver linings.
My first project as the resident artist at the Centre for Text Margins is out:
https://hlnet.neocities.org/ascii-automata/
ASCII AUTOMATA is a tool to analyze the visual connectivity of characters in textmode fonts. It works by scoring edge connectivity of each piece and finding the best matching neighbour piece. Every time it places a piece, it "grows" towards the edges it touches by placing a matching piece. The red heatmap shows how frequently each character is used, useful for analyzing the fonts.
"Mark your calendars! The first-ever TV series from Wong Kar Wai — visionary director of IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE and CHUNGKING EXPRESS — will premiere exclusively on our streaming service, The Criterion Channel, on November 24 at 8pm ET."
Monthly listening, October 2025: Autechre
Sad to have missed the US tour due to traveling then getting sick.
Time to export my videos and delete the account.

Monthly listening, September 2025: Saint Etienne
From This Is Radio Etienne to The Last Time, a discography chock full of favorites since college days. I'll miss them very much.
Sadly I'll likely miss this talk by a legend.
"Matthew Carter is a type designer whose work can be seen on your computer (Georgia and Verdana) and in the New York Times, Boston Globe, and Sports Illustrated, and all over Yale University. He has received just about every possible recognition the graphic design industry has to offer—including a 2019–2020 exhibition at Katherine Small Gallery."

Monthly listening, August 2025: Four Tet
Better very, very late than never. Four Tet's music has been helpful throughout the year whenever the going got tough. I'll spend some time today to organize and listen to the many rips of his recent live sets saved on my laptop.
