Oh it's owl day! Here is a photo from that time I had to take a pygmy owl to the wildlife rescue because he got tangled up in some garden netting (owl was fine, they gave him back to me to release where I found him, I no longer use garden netting).

Pygmy owl is smol birb but has big mad. ๐Ÿ˜ก

A very angry small brown owl sitting on a white towel inside a box. Very very angry.

Do you ever feel like you missed your calling, and were meant to be touring the countryside in a motorcycle & sidecar with your well dressed badger best friend, solving minor mysteries and enjoying tea & adventure?

@violenteastcoastcity I have not had an orange for a long time, but this is so true. ๐Ÿ˜†

@That_Damn_Frank That would be a great idea except that we don't actually have any stairs in this house! Long hallways seem to be working reasonably well, though.

Vet: And what breed is Minna?
Me: She is smol void baby.
Vet: Excuse me?
Me: Sorry. Domestic short hair. Black.

Minna, a smol void baby (aka a black cat), standing on the windowsill and looking cute.

@ScruffyJunco As to the insurance question my understanding is that if something terrible turns up on the testing, it is then a preexisting condition -- and as egregiously horrible as our insurance system is they are still required to handle preexisting conditions.

So sorry about your loved one; I hope they can find some answers. Four cancers is a lot.

@ScruffyJunco I had breast cancer and was referred for genetic testing before surgery, specifically to rule out BRCA (the breast cancer gene).

I did not think I had BRCA -- no family history -- but I was a bit nervous that something else scary would turn up. The report came back with two unusual mutations that had nothing to do with cancer, and were just unusual. The genetic counselors were really good at answering all my questions and being very, very reassuring.

Stupid shower thought: Hey, you know that guy who managed to spend $20 implementing an alarm clock with an LLM that just repeatedly asked "is it time yet?" all night until the tokens ran out?

I'm actually sympathizing with the LLM, because that's what it feels like to me when there's an afternoon meeting scheduled. :blobsweats:

A photo that appears to have a "gettyimages" watermark but the watermark is actually painted directly on the bridge.

@stevendbrewer @cstross Alas Target has not been the upscale Walmart for some time now, they are on par at best. Even aside from the terrible anti-DEI decisions they've made it's pretty darn depressing to go there.

I know |'ve said it before but it does annoy me that at this stage of the pandemic the respirators that actually exist look like Immortan Joes retrained as a plasterer, and meanwhile there are artists out there drawing stuff like this.

Like if I have to live in a cyberpunk dystopia I should at least get a cool mask out of it you know?

Art is by yuumeiart.com/, who said that the latest in the series is inspired by the #PortlandFrog

A female presenting person ties her hair back while wearing a full face respirator adorned with horns and spikes an angry wrinkled nose above a scowling mouth with intersecting fangs and tusksThe character wears a respirator adorned with the top half of a cat's face, with a sun design on the forehead and flames in the ears. Her trailing hair and the wisps of vapour around her give the illusion of movementThe character covers the lower half of her face with her hand, wearing shoulder length scale mail fingerless gloves. Her respirator is in the shape of a ram's skull with coiled horns. It is adorned with swirling, spiky designs that match the tattoos on her shoulders. The character has her arms crossed in front of her, with "Do not obey!" written on both sleeves. She is wearing a full helmet with a frog's face above hers and lotus flowers around the valves of her respirator, and her eyes are the same yellow as the frog's.

@graydon Yeah we have had other fetcher cats that did grow out of it. I'm not super hopeful it's going to remain a thing.

Cato the new cat is a fetcher, and he's very good at it. He's even good at the "drop the ball right at my feet" part.

Only problem is that he wants to do it over and over and over and will start tapping my leg and going 'mrrpr mrrp rrrrp" if I don't keep throwing it for him.

He has also discovered the box of cat toys so if he loses one under the couch he just goes and gets another one.

Today's trail: All of Bandersnatch, with side quests to Red Queen and Gryphon. Bandersnatch is all tight switchbacks and my knees hurt.

6.88 miles; I did an easy week last week so now I'm back to longer hikes.

A trail through the woods on the side of a hill, with mostly open ground between the trees
