Very excited to be rejoining the conference space with this talk! We’re going to be looking at whether accessibility compliance is working, what the issues are and get some inspiration from work in gaming accessibility mastodon.world/@webstandards/1

Using LLMs for accessibility is a dead end because a) they accelerate climate change and b) put more power in the pockets of Big Tech and venture capitalists and both of these outcomes increase the inequality disabled people globally face.

On an individual level LLMs and other AI services can benefit disabled folks, in the same way access to taxis via Uber does, but like Uber ultimately disabled people will be dropped like a hot rock once the companies running AI have made themselves ubiquitous

Adding music to my iPhone via iTunes for Windows takes years off my lifespan every time I need to do it.

Did you know you can criticise people on the far right without resorting to fatphobia, homophobia or ableism?

This post brought to you by a person with an alternating pronounced squint seeing a load of people loving “swivel-eyed loon” as an insult

Watching my train get later and later which means my 12 minute connection time is down to just 2. British transport is fucked and there’s no interest in sorting it

They made the Lindt chocolate bears heterosexual this is a disgrace, straight people shoving it down our throats again

A gift box of two chocolate teddy bears covered in gold foil, the one on the right has a red jumper design, the one of the left has a pink jumper and bow so you know it’s a girl bear

Don’t think petitions are all that useful, but over a million is good numbers petition.parliament.uk/petitio

there's a new scam going around where your body will be like we need to sleep NOW but then when you're in bed it will be like nah haha just joking

If you are NOT on Tumblr, if you don't live in the USA, and *especially* if you haven't heard of the Gender Census, would you consider filling in my very short demographic survey with lots of ticky-boxes, and maybe sharing it with someone else who is also not on Tumblr?

docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI

Actually people who use Tumblr are also very welcome to participate, they're just VERY overrepresented in the survey so I'm trying to drag in basically anyone else as well!

I feel this and I hate it

ADHD when you are passionate about what you're doing:
(stronk shiba): "I have been working on this project for 10 hours straight. I ahve accomplished in one day what would take a normal person an entire week. Nothing can stop me, I am a FUCKING GOD!"

ADHD when you aren't:
(whine-y shiba): "Washing dish is very hard"

Alright what’s with the jimmy follower spam?

@babe

edit: thank you everyone for ackshuallying a shitpost, your replies are extremely necessary and I'm very impressed by what a bunch of super smart cool boys y'all are

a crudely made comic:
1. a 3D model of a helium atom saying: bonjour c'est moi helium. je suis un gaz noble.
2. Meme Man dressed as Robespierre, with angry eyebrows drawn on in MS Paint: Noble ?
3. Robespierre is standing next to a guillotine, holding an MS Paint-drawn rope. the helium atom is positioned below the blade.
4. a photograph of a nuclear mushroom.

Text alternatives, especially for complex images, are not just for blind or visually impaired folks, they are also important for users with cognitive issues and/or are neurodivergent.

Alt text is not always the best medium for this; text alternatives in the body are better for long descriptions. Alt text is not the be all and end all of making images accessible.

Pulled out :(

I get big conferences aren't exactly crying out for talks so who cares but I just can't deal with not having clear dates and I'm rapidly running out of time to get into writing it.

true trans liberation comes when everyone - cis and trans and otherwise - can look how they want, act how they want, and achieve the care that they want, while being supported by the people and systems around them

this includes informed consent hormones for
anyone who wants them

using whatever name and pronouns and identity terms for
anyone who asks

informed consent surgeries of
all varieties

and none of this being restricted by gender identity, presentation, characteristics, or other gatekeeping bullshit

Not only are my union handwavy on trans rights, but their only objection to AI taking over where I work is that not everyone is being trained in it equally 🙄

Gonna write to my rep and then probably move to a different one

5-minute demographic survey for anyone and everyone. Please participate for Science, and also to validate my spreadsheet-hoarding, curiosity-following, etc!

Submitted a talk to a conference earlier in the year but struggling to find the energy to write it until I know it’s going to get in (ND brain needs deadlines) but if I wait until I know I won’t have time to write it in a way I’ll be happy with. I want this to be my definitive accessibility talk; everything I’ve thought and experienced in the last 7 years.

I miss public speaking terribly but I forgot how annoying the actual applying for a slot can be.
