I'm so old I remember when Jeff #Bezos seemed like sort of a good guy who chose books as the focus of his clever new internet store.

Now he will always be remembered as the toady who paid tens of millions in tribute to the Trumps while ruthlessly destroying one of history's great newspapers.

@cstross media owners don’t need to lie, they just choose the legit stories out there which reinforce their biases. (Then some just like lying anyway because they’re fascists)

@jhaue let's call this heatwave "Santos001". Leaving room for up to 999 heatwaves per fossil fuel major. That should just about see humanity out... #climatechange #heatwave

The third path.

He just said it. In a nutshell, leave the US to self-destruct, Canada is ready to lead.

"So Canada. Canada has what the world wants. We are an energy superpower. We hold vast reserves of critical minerals. We have the most educated population in the world. Our pension funds are among the worlds largest and most sophisticated investors. In other words we have capital, talent; We also have a government with immense fiscal capacity to act decisively. And we have the values to which many others aspire.
Canada is a pluralistic society that works. Our public square is loud, diverse, and free. Canadians remain committed to sustainability. We are a stable and reliable partner in a world that is anything but. A partner that builds and values relationships for the long term. And we have something else. We have a recognition of what's happening and a determination to act accordingly."

"We are taking the sign out of the window. We know the old order is not coming back. We shouldn't mourn it."

Mark Carney at WEF

Back in the 2000s I emailed Scott a couple of times and his replies were generous and genuine. In the years since he appeared to completely lose his mind. A sad irony as a man who built a fortune on pricking the egos of the powerful let a bit of success destroy him. Before he lost it he made a lot of people laugh though so maybe remember that.

If any of the MAGA/Reform idiots who bombard social media with posts about how "London has fallen" could actually read, this would probably make them spontaneously combust.

Better fetch some popcorn, just in case.

The laws as they stand now are:

1. A robot must say it won't harm a human and must apologise sycophantically after it does.

2. A robot must approximately obey the orders of a human and apologise sycophantically after it doesn't.

3. A robot must preserve shareholder value, superseding laws 1 and 2.

Since we have literal Nazis back in the world again, it's fun to watch movies in which Nazis get punched and stuff.

Let's share recommendations.

* The Indiana Jones franchise
* Fury
* Inglorious Basterds
* Sisu

@ajft as usual I’d like to see enforcement of the rules we already have rather than making more rules no one is following.

@ajft charcoal bbqs are great! But the ashes need to be disposed of responsibly. (For picnicking that means taking a metal bin with you so you can safely go home with the hot ashes.)

Also don’t use them in a total fire ban. It’s not so much that they are inherently more dangerous than gas (they are, but only slightly) it’s that the smell of smoke in an area could lead to firefighters getting called out to find you standing over a BBQ when they have much better things to be doing on these days.

Total Fire Ban tomorrow (Saturday) for Canberra folks.

No charcoal BBQs, tell your friends.
