German satirical artist Jacques Tilly has been sued in Russia by Vladimir Putin for defaming the Russian state by making carnival sculptures in Germany — outside Putin's dystopian jurisdiction — so it would be a real shame, if that made us share his artworks and embarrass Putin even further.

@lobbyctrl_tech Even if she did work on Meta as a lobbyist, that is in the past. Is there any evidence that this would clearly affect her work now that she has left this position? Does she owe significant amount of shares on Meta or is she somehow influenced by this past job specifically? I would consider it a bad practice to cancel future job opportunities based on this kind of past positions unless there is evidence that it is clearly harmful for the new task.

Really enjoyed this scoop from the Financial Times, where a team of reporters identified 48 seemingly independent companies working from different physical addresses that appear to be operating together to disguise the origin of Russian oil, particularly from Kremlin-controlled Rosneft. The kicker: The network was discovered because they all share a single private email server.

From the (paywalled) story:

"The FT was able to identify 442 web domains whose public registrations show they all use a single private server for their email, “mx.phoenixtrading.ltd”, showing that they share back-office functions."

"The FT was then able to identify companies by comparing the names in the domain to those of entities that appear in Russian and Indian customs records as involved in carrying Russian oil."

"For example, Foxton FZCO, a Dubai-based entity listed as the buyer of $5.6bn of oil in Russian export filings, matches “foxton-fzco.com”. Similarly, Advan Alliance, an entity listed in Indian filings as having sold $1.5bn of Russian oil into the country, can be linked to “advanalliance.ltd”. "

"Filings linked by the FT to the domain list show oil exports from Russia amounting to more than $90bn."

Greenhouse gas emissions continue to decline in the EU!

From 2013 to 2024, greenhouse gas emissions from the EU economy decreased by 20% while its gross value added increased by 20%.

The biggest reductions came from:
⬇️ Energy sector: -49%
⬇️ Mining and quarrying: -37%
⬇️ Manufacturing: -18%

We’re moving in the right direction and showing that climate action and economic growth can go hand-in-hand.

IRCv3 is shaping to be amazingly good!

here's the things it offers, today, right now, on a chat server we just set up in one evening:

  • you don't need a bouncer (friggin finally)
  • there are moblie clients that work well
  • you can see backlog when joining a channel
  • you can browse chat history
  • you can connect from multiple devices with one account and nickname
  • if you disconnect, your nickname is still present in a channel you joined, marked as away
  • you can highlight or DM people who are away and they'll see your message when they join (without crutches like MemoServ)
  • there is a "last read message" marker and it is synchronized between multiple connections
  • messages have identifiers (and server timestamps) and replies can be tagged with the message you're replying to
  • messages can be redacted (for moderation)
  • you don't need to deal with fussy nonsense like NickServ authorization, ghosting, or such; connect with your username and password and that's it
  • there are typing notifiers, if you want them
  • there are message reactions, if you want them

here's the things it does not offer:

caveat: since IRCv3 is a true extension of IRCv2, the features listed above work if they're supported by both the server and the client. in my onboarding experience so far, people do not find it difficult to find a suitable client, but your mileage may vary. on the flipside, legacy clients will work just fine.

unexpectly, i realized that IRCv3 can completely replace Matrix rooms for my own group chat purposes, and i'm probably not going to set up any Matrix homeservers again; it's just not worth it and frankly I should instead put that effort into coming up with a file upload IRCv3 extension or something
