@cherizilla So they are upset at what legislation is forcing Discord to do? Seems like being angry at the wrong thing. Oh well.

2026-02-09

A lot of people complaining about Discord today. Is it the age verification thing?

Honestly, I wished writing OSS and fiction was enough to live on because it continues to remain my goal to get away from large companies.

I'm just not lucky/good enough to sustain myself on those.

I envy the Spritely Institute being able to do what they love with a small team. :(

... as I go into the fourth meeting of the day instead of coding.

I'm not exactly happy with the code but I'm clearly in the "make it work" stage instead of the "make it pretty". Given the number of clone() in my Rust code, I'd worry about running out of memory (I'm not really, these are tiny structures).

But, I also need to stop and let things settle. At the moment I got, you can go through the login process, from entering user name, being presented with challenges (request password will be the first for the MVP), enter the password and get an authenticated session.

It isn't working on the web, the error messages are shit, but the test script runs correctly so I'm going to take it as a win. Once I get a better pattern for error messages, handling invalid passwords, and handling invalid accounts, then I'll migrate this to the web and may have some screenshots.

Just not today.

Logged into work long enough to restart a RDP session running a client program that IT has auto closing.

Struggling with nihilism today but going to force myself to do the next few steps on Leicmin while the rest of the family sleeps.

... If my work computer ever shuts down.

@primeapple I'm sticking with Nix for the time being. I hate Nix as a language but the benefits still out weigh that frustration. I get a lot with deploying my homelab and Typewriter hosts and I spend a lot less time bringing my code up to date just to make a PDF for my stories.

@sl007 @jottacloud @nextcloud @cmccullough There are hosting provers for Nextcloud if that's your thing.

KDE Connect changed their icons and the splash of color in my Articons home screen is painful now.

@noracodes I will take Rust's 5.3 GB target direct for hello world over the hell that is Python packages.

I’m sorry but if you’re on substack still, get the hell off. Lots of ways to make your own website now. If you need help, ask me. I will literally give you free consulting to get your blog going somewhere else. Holy Christ.

Pushed up Leicmin to Radicle to play, getting more comfortable with the rad id command stuff, but the default seeds hosts are not playing well, I suspect because they are overloaded. Drawbacks of default instances.

@dmoonfire this applies also to scrollbars.. Possibly even more so.

2026-02-07

Dear programs, you don't have to hide icons until I hover over them. It's okay to let me know they are there.

2026-02-07

@raven Yeah, "clearly written code doesn't need comments" is a big old flag that someone hasn't maintained something for a decade.

Him: well what's your big brain idea to eliminate food assistance fraud?

Me: universal food assistance

Him:

Me: because there wouldn't be a system to cheat, everyone would just get a check

Him: and who does that benefit?

Me: family farmers and human beings who rely on food for nutrition

Him: what about rich people?

Me: what about them?

Him: you would give them food assistance too?

Me: that's what universal means

Him: you can't do that

Me: yesterday you said I couldn't tax them and now you won't let me feed them either?

Him: they can afford food

Me: then it should be fine to tax them

Him: but if you tax them they won't have as much money

Me: I'm willing to offer universal food assistance

Hrm, never realize Tusky also doesn't do long code fences well. Bummer.
