"All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system, and public health...what have the Romans ever done for us?"

By the same token, when you look closely, what has congestion pricing done for #NYC anyway?

TIL, an open source internet search engine called MarginaliaSearch exists. It mainly for text-oriented websites, specifically indexing the 'small, old, and weird' web. You can even run it on your own server if you have 32GiB of RAM and plenty of fast SSD space for the index. This is perfect for those seeking an alt search engine, but more importantly, it teaches you how to build a search system and manage its dataset. It’s a fantastic CS learning experience to satisfy your itch.

For a brief moment in time, my childhood friends in Singapore had incredible lives and stories. I didn’t understand it at the time but many of them were escaping.. something.

A Cambodian-French friend whose dad escaped the Khmer Rouge. A Korean friend whose family member was a leftist political dissident, killed by the military dictator. Many Sri Lankan Tamil friends whose parents fled civil war and genocide. More than five friends from the same group of ā€˜kids of Bangladeshi independence leaders’. All of that in public schools!

I spent so much time around these friends, eating at their homes, listening to their family’s stories. They didn’t all stay on in Singapore but I am still in touch with all of them. Singapore in the late 90s and early 00s was still a pivotal moment in many of their lives.

They taught me that between war and conflict and genocide and sadness and finding new homes elsewhere and being disappointed, food from your home (wherever that is) is one way to celebrate.

My Cambodian friend’s family introduced me to amok. They’re back in France and Belgium now. But I still see them sometimes when I’m in Europe. My Bangladeshi friends fed me copious amounts of mishti doi. I recently had noodles in New York with my Korean friend.

As a privileged Singaporean child whose primary challenge in life was ā€˜what is my score for my exam’, knowing all of these people and their families and eating with them showed me that there is so much more color, nuance, terror, horror, but also warmth in life. Over and over I have been welcomed into people’s homes, no matter where they come from or what they’ve been through. The least I can do is do the same for others.

I find it very difficult to take the side of hatred when I’ve seen the geographical dispersion and personal challenges it causes to the people who are targets of hatred. I’ve also seen how much more fun and delicious it is to not be hateful.

The recently installed RapidTO bus lanes on Dufferin have already caused Daniel Tate's so-called IntegrityTO to blame bus lanes for gridlock. Having used to take the Sufferin', we need to prioritize the 40,000 daily bus users over single occupancy cars! #TTC #TOpoli www.instagram.com/integrity_to...

Instagram post by @integrity_to published November 28, 2025 with 606 likes

Image: A line of cars on Dufferin Street with red RapidTO bus lanes and a caption saying "Red lanes causing gridlock on Dufferin"

Text: RapidTO is already causing havoc on Dufferin as cars remain backed up while the red bus-only lane remains barren. With so many cars sitting idle, carbon emissions will surely increase to the horror of environmentalist @dianne.saxe who architected the RapidTO plan. A truly ironic twist of fate for Toronto's resident climate activist. What do you think?

"Writing code is easy. Once you have a solution in mind, and have mastered the syntax of your favorite programming language, writing code is easy. Having an LLM write entire functions for you? Even easier. But the hard part isn’t the writing. It’s the reading. It’s the time it takes to load the mental model of the system into your head. That’s where all the cost really is."

"Qualcomm-owned #Arduino quietly pushed a sweeping rewrite of its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and the changes mark a clear break from the open-hardware ethos that built the platform."

(source: Adafruit linkedin.com/posts/adafruit_op)

Oh boy, that was fast! Somehow we need to find more future-proof models for open-source hardware. Letting the market do its thing is showing its true colors once again. Pure evil! šŸ‘æ

#opensource #hardware #fablab #makerspace #electronics

Qualcomm-owned Arduino quietly pushed a sweeping rewrite of its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and the changes mark a clear break from the open-hardware ethos that built the platform.
The new documents introduce an irrevocable, perpetual license over anything users upload, broad surveillance-style monitoring of AI features, a clause preventing users from identifying potential patent infringement, years-long retention of usernames even after account deletion, and the integration of all user data (including minors) into Qualcomm’s global data ecosystem. Military weird things and more.

Several sections effectively reshape Arduino from an open community platform into a tightly controlled corporate service with deep data extraction built in. The most striking addition:

users are now explicitly forbidden from reverse-engineering or even attempting to understand how the platform works unless Arduino gives permission. That’s a profound shift for a brand long embraced by educators, makers, researchers, and open-source advocates.

I need folks to understand some important things about this:

1) Black men are disproportionately targeted for Federal drug prosecutions.

2) Black men receive disproportionately harsh Federal sentences.

2) So an unbiased reduction in Fed drug prosecutions, disproportionately *benefits* Black men.🤯

Racism is fascism practiced on Black people first.

Hitler based the Nuremberg laws on US Jim Crow. He invaded Russia because he wanted his own California.

The US shifting from a racist country to a fascist country basically means "Start treating everyone like you've always treated Black people."

In 2025, everyone has been getting a tiny taste of "Basic, level 1, beginner tutorial mode" of what Black people experience in this country in 2024.

And you've only been experiencing it for ~9 months.

And you're like, "No more! This is unbearable!"

You're right. It is unbearable.
