R. Brent Stansfield

I live in Houston, TX and Ann Arbor, MI. I work at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. I'm a quant-head psychologist, linux user, open source software advocate, songwriter and aspiring composer, middle-aged (can I still say that?) father/husband, working on being better than before.

Guys what happened to Libby? It looks like they AI'ed the UI and borked the actual book catalog!

Hi!

Jennifer Hamilton here, formerly of med-mastodon.com. That server shut down suddenly. If you followed me before for my toots about #vaccines, #PublicHealth, #FamilyMedicine, my gripes about #ElectronicMedicalRecords #EMR, or even just a few #caturday pictures and chats about bicycling, I'm on mstdn.science now.

The old #MedMastodon went down suddenly in the last week of December 2025, and I don't have a list of my old followers. Please boost this so they can find me!

@george Ah I see that's more of a public health way of looking at it. The bad guy doesn't care about getting into *my* shit, but cares about getting into *someone's* shit. That makes more sense.

Question for any security IT people: when a system requires 2-factor authentication and sends a numeric code to my phone, why are those codes sometimes so long? Is it so much less secure to send a 2- or 3-digit code than a 6- or 8-digit code?

I haven't seen any AI-generated content yet this year! (just woke up). I have not been exhorted to use an AI chatbot yet this year! How long can I keep this streak going??

New Years Resolution: live more in the terminal and do more within emacs. I'm tired of the web and all the tracking and third-party cookie bullspit. I'm an old man who grew up on the command line and gadummit I'm going to move back there. GUIs are dumb. So here's me tooting from an emacs buffer for the first time and loving it.

@alex the best part is you can always fix your linux or start over with a different distro. Just keep backing up. On on!

Kafka becomes more accessible

Soon the first English Kafka books will enter the US public domain. The Castle, one of several Kafka works translated by Willa and Edwin Muir, gets there in 17 days.

Wyandotte, MI showed up. I suck at crowd size, but there had to be several thousand people there, quite a bit larger than the last one. Just a few MAGAts, who were cheerfully ignored. Everyone was smiling, laughing, greeting neighbors, admiring signs and costumes. After all the discussion about safety, this was about as threatening as an ice cream social at the Methodist church.

One thing I noticed were people who had repurposed the Gadsden flag from the other side to ours.

@peterhoneyman I was next to you. The crowd stretched from Dexter Rd to past Liberty. Nothing but positive vibes the whole way.

Mastodon feels like the future the 1980s promised us. "Oh look, a post from my friend at hacker.space, and what a funny comment from some guy on gaysex.cloud, perhaps I should follow them, they seem witty."

It feels like you could turn a corner and wind up in a tearoom filled with furries discussing existentialism. Across the street are anarchists arguing loudly with socialists about how best to stick it to the capitalists.

Just down the way is a photographer who only takes pictures of bees.
